Default Views on a D2 V60/S60

Hi

I have the good fortune of choosing a new company car, but need to get something below 110Kg CO2 emissions. I fancy a V60 or S60 D2 but I am a bit wary it will feel underpowered. Can anybody with a D2 advise what they are like to drive and live with please? I have had a short test drive from the local dealer, but it was too short to come to any real conclusions. Also is the R design a bit firm on the ride comfort?

Many thanks in advance for your opinions.

Regards
Andy

I haven't driven one myself but from what I've read from owners, it isn't going to set your world on fire but of course it's subjective and at least you're in a nice environment in which to go slow.

I believe the 0-60 is timed with a calendar.

For me, the R Design ride is the perfect trade off between comfort and decent handling. The last two V70's I had were supremely comfortable but at the same time they handled like barges. Can't comment on the D2 but I'm sure it would propel the car adequately well...

Not sure about the D2 in either but my D3 v60 R design handles very well, can feel a bit harsh over badly pot holled roads, the D3 isn't going to win any drag races but is fine as a motorway cruiser. Had a 1.6 driveE on v50 se lux which was a bit softer and still drove well, again was good for cruising.

You will have driven the older D2 which is 1.6 litre, whereas newly ordered D2's will be the new VEA 2.0 litre with a few bhp more - and may be a different drive altogether. We have an s60 D2 and for the main it is a perfectly acceptable car, no ball of fire but adequate. Then again I don't really drive it! I have also had the misfortune to drive the V70 D2 geartronic, and to be honest, it is a long long time since I have driven a car that felt so underpowered, both in acceleration and between the gears. The D2 engine is,imo, best kept to the V40 where it is a decent match to the size of the car.

If I were you I would opt for the D3 s60 or v60 as this will more likely be a better combination of power and economy,at not much more money, and would suit you perfectly.

Finally just so you know, all new reg cars will have the newer vea engines.

Not experienced the new D2, but have had a fair bit of experience of the D2 1.6 in numerous V40s and 2 day test drive in V60 before ordering mine. I found that in the V60 it was very underpowered without the torque that makes diesels a pleasure and particularly painful on the numerous hills down here. I also found that even while cruising there was an intrusive drone from the engine. In the V40 I am still surprised it's the same engine and would happily part with my own cash because it's more than adequate, pretty refined and peppy too. I don't believe there's a huge difference in vehicle kerb weights (200kg?) but I my opinion it pushes the limit from acceptable to not.

I did a write-up on the old D2 - http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=216917 -which I could compare to my D3. I didn't like it much.

The new D2 is a new VEA 2l engine with 120bhp, I'm not sure if demonstrators for them are even available yet as it's only just come out.

Personally, I'd go for the D3 with 150bhp - it's still under 110g - and will be much better suited to the size of car.

Why not go for the D4 which is still under 110g/km?

+1 to this - even with the new revisions to the D4 engine which tipped them over the 99g/km threshold, the emissions are 104g/km for manual V60 D4s in both Business Edition and SE Nav trims. The S60 D4 is 102g/km.

The new S60 D2 does scrape below the 100g/km threshold, but because it's not available in Business Edition trim, the base-level D2 SE is MORE expensive in BIK tax than a D4 Business Edition.

If you can live without the handful of extras that the SE trim gives you, you can have an extra 70bhp under your right foot while paying less in tax. I know which I'd rather have ....

You can play with the tax options for all the spec and trim levels here: http://comcar.co.uk/newcar/companycar/taxcalc/
