Car sought by newish member.
I don't know whether I might be asking for the impossible here, but nothing ventured, nothing gained.
I am looking for a really solid 240, preferably with a L-O-N-G test, which does not require anything complicated or expensive doing to it. I don't mind which model, but I should stress that I'm able to do simple cleaning, fettling and servicing type jobs, but because of a pretty severe heart condition I can't tackle heavy welding or other advanced stuff. What I want is a nice, presentable car which I can use for shows in 2010, not as a concours contender, just an exhibit that will give people pleasure. I love the cars, and have a reasonable budget for the right car. If anyone has such a car, or might be thinking of changing in the not-too-distant future I'd be really grateful for a tip-off. Autos are fine - my last 3 or 4 cars have all been self-shifters - but I've 37 years of driving to fall back on so I reckon I'd cope with a manual again. I live near Alton Towers, and would be very grateful for any responses. Any replies will be answered as soon as I pick them up. Many thanks John

Dear John. We have a 1987 Volvo Estate 2.4 with 108,000 miles on the clock, MOT'd until next August, taxed until end February. It has been well maintained and has been a solid and reliable car - some bits of rust but generally in good condition and runs well. Needs a couple of valve replacements that are about £40 I gather from our volvo mechanic.
We have been trying to donate it to a mechanics school but they haven't been back to us. So, we're happy to give it to someone who would find it of use - seems a shame to scrap it - there's lots of life in the old girl yet. We are in North London so don't know whether that is too far for you to come. I do have photos of it and could send them if it is of interest. It is manual and a petrol engine by the way and a roof rack and dog guard. We are away next week for a week but otherwise around. Ruari King |
