Default Back-Box Heat Shield

Morning all,

The other week the heat shield over the back box on my 855 came loose and was rattling. All rather annoying. I inspected it and saw the four nuts that hold it on had gone. The fixed bolts were all rather corroded. I replaced the nuts as well as I could and it was fine until they too disappeared. The heat shield had been resting on the back box itself and the rattling was becoming unbearable.

I got so fed up I have now removed the shield altogether as I can get enough access to weld/bolt the thing on.

I am after some advice apropos of the effects of this. Is running without a heat shield here ok? If not, why not?

Cheers,
- Rich

No one has any experience of this?

Apologies for the hideous bump.

To be honest (although i accept no responsibility) I really wouldnt worry at the back end of the exhaust does get hot but not enough to start peeling paint, burning stuff etc, it would be a different story for the front or over the cat as these get very hot, although not long ago i had a similar problem (rattling) on my wifes BMW and that was a long about 4 ft heatshield that went from just in front of the cat to the diff, i ended up fighting with it as i lost my temper and ripped the ba****d off screwing it up and throwing it down the road after loosing my knuckles and burning my hands, and i had no problems that i know of afterwards, no funny smells or smoking carpet lol but imagine it might have warmed up the underseal a bit dont know but it got rid of that poxy rattling, it had too corroded around the bolt holes (ally sheet) and when i went to undo the bolts to put big washers on they all sheared off so i gave up as i was in severe pain with my legs
