I can only comment on the Westfalia towbar that I fitted to my 2008 model...
In addition to three mounting bolts each side - which are M12 x 120, there are two "mounting plates" ( My description ). These have tubes welded to them that pass through the box section of the chassis, so that when tightened the box section is not "squashed" ! Take a look at this picture - They are Parts 3 & 4. I don't know if this is the same as with the Volvo genuine bar, but I would imagine so. PLEASE do check how the genuine Volvo bar should be fitted - you can do some serious damage to your car if not fitted correctly !

but you dont know the price of the volvo bolt kit do you?
Remember there are now legal implications with tow bars and their mountings you have to use correct authourised parts now . engineering bolts are not stretch bolts ...

I've sorted it I need M12 x 40. Thanks everyone. After 30 years of engineering I'm sure a 8.8 graded bold will will do the job and I don't need to make a Volvo executive richer than he already is.

Further to my comments above I've added a couple of photos. The first shows what I presume is the plug for the towbar electrics on my car which is in the right hand rear wing panel. The second shows the socket I have on the towbar electrics.
These are obviously not compatible so my questions are:
Would appreciate any feedback whatsoever so I can get this put to bed! |

I may be wrong here but I think you may find that the first picture is the connector for plugging into a "towing module" (a special black box in the can-bus system) the plug on the wiring pigtail connects into this towing module.
If the car was not originally speced with towing electrics then the wiring will be there but the towing module may not. Just my thoughts. Oh as for the "sofware download" asked about earlier. It will enable the "sensing" circuit which, as well as switching off the car fog light and rear parking sensors, will enable trailer stability software and trailer indicator warning systems. |

Sorry, I should have mentioned that the plug on the towbar is actually at the end of a box of electrics. I assume this is the towing module, Volvo part number 30664652

Hi truckbus,
What change do you see on the dashboard for the indicators? I have the Westfalia wiring and never noticed anything different when the bike rack is attached...

Hello Ron, I've got a Westphalia detachable bar and Volvo trailer module and 13 pin Volvo wiring kit, when something is plugged into the 13 pin socket (Thule bike rack in my case) then in the display panel to the lower RHS of the dash I get a flashing <==> symbol that looks like 2 direction indicator arrows whenever the indicators or the hazard light operate.
