Default Bigger Discs for 940.

Has anyone fitted larger diameter discs on the front of a 940 using standard Volvo parts ?

I know some have used aftermarket calipers (not sure about the discs) but I was wondering if bits of one of the larger newer cars could be used such as XC90's.

I'm running FWD steel wheels on my car with spacers so have a lot of room for even big 4 pot calipers.

The brakes are OK but don't inspire much when you need to slow down from higher speeds.

yes , 302mm , 850 caliper carriers , 850 calipers ,and 4 6mm spacers to space the caliper to the disc properly

Default Volvo bits

I believe you can get Mazda RX7 bits in as well.

OTOH, get some Black Diamond discs and pads and take care of them when running in. Mine are most inspiring, and I'll give you some clues as to how hard I am on brakes>

Between my 3 7/9s I've had 5 sets of discs in 5 years - all warped.

I'm waiting with trepidation for a letter from a man with a kodak which MAY show me within 10% of doubling the UK nat limit. Mind you his reflexes would have had to be like lightning. At the relevant location I frequently have to reduce from warp 9 to 30 for a roundabout, never any issues.

About a year ago a plonk in a Vauxhall pulled out in front of me without looking 'cos she was doing the nat limit. I was in the 760T without enhanced brakes and it got very hairy (I had to lose about 50mph in but seconds) but I'd feel reasonably confident with the Black Diamonds.

Unless you are doing multiple stops from 20% over the ton it should be hard to fade the standard Volvo brakes - unless you have SMALLs. I once faded a set of BIGs (on my 740GLT) - it was my third stop from well north of the figure I mentioned.

Thanks Dave
Sounds like a good plan. I don't want alloy calipers as they are a bit obvious.
Is there a particular version of 850 or are they just the biggest ones you can get ?
I don't actually know what diameter the 940 ones are, piston diameter is something to think about as well.
I used to have a lockheed catalogue witn disc and caliper info in years ago but it go lent to someone.

Thanks Roger as well. Just thinking at the moment.
All of my other cars have really good feeling brakes, they bite quite hard and feel like they are doing something. The 940 ones need a fair old shove to make much happen so bigger discs and calipers with slightly larger pistons could be the answer.
I'm always wary of super pads as there is normally a trade off between cold and hot performance.

Thats more like it !

I wonder if they would fit under my steel wheels. Alloys are normally a lot thicker.
XC90 discs are a good start will have to look into this furthur.
Cheers, haven't looked on Turbobricks for a while now.

Default 17

He's using 17 inch Fwd offset wheels with spacers. I think 17 is the minimum but they do look massive!

Are you having problems with brake fade, have you tried new fluid? Bleedling can be tricky.

Otherwise if your brakes are not able to max out the traction (ie go into anti-lock) from whatever topspeed there is something wrong with them.

I don't think there is actually anything wrong with them. I fitted new discs and pads a while back, they just lack bite really.
I like cars with brakes you can feel working. My Mini has Metro vented discs and 4 pot calipers which are too good really and they are brilliant despite having no servo. Even the old Astra I have has got bigger vented discs off a Cavalier fitted.

I'm not the sort of person who is hard on brakes either, just my driving style (if there is such a thing) suits things that way. I suppose thinking about it the accelerator is light to operate, as is the clutch but the brakes take a bit of a stomp in comparison.
