Default Loss of washer pump?

Hi,

Forgive the stupid question, this morning is the first morning I have ever spent looking under the bonnet of a 240...

I've looked at my washer pumps, which aren't working. One of them (the one furtherest back in the engine bay) isn't getting any power to it. I know it's like finding a v.long piece of string, but how do I isolate this problem?

I'm guessing the switch is fine as the other pump is getting power just fine. Is there a dedicated fuse for each pump?

Any advice gratfully received.

One pump is for the front and the other pump is for the rear window.

If it's the pump for the front washers try jiggling the switch about the point you would normally expect them to work. The switch can be a bit intermittent.

Mine tends to make contact as you release it rather then when you pull it towards you.

Have you checked for no power with a voltmeter &c? Or is it just that it isn't working?

First port of call with electrical gremlins is generally your fuse box which is prone to corrosion on a 240. If something has blown it'll be obvious as well.

Windscreen wash/wipe, headlamp wipers & horn are on Fuse 2.

Tailgate wash/wipe, cigar lighter & Radio are on fuse 1

I have the same problem, but my horn and headlamp washers are working so can assume the fuse is too, and it's either a duff connection or faulty washer motor. Are they prone to failing, or quite resilient?

(Hope this isn't a thread hijack as it's same topic!)

Do you mean headlamp washers or wipers? The windscreen and headlamps share the same pump.

My windscreen washers weren't working so went and checked and the pump was buzzing when I pulled the stalk.

On mine the water tank had a lot of sediment/black slime in the bottom blocking the outflow. I removed the tank and cleaned it out and checked the pump before refitting to see if it was spraying with the hose disconnected.
I believe from memory the pump has a filter?

Hmm, no the headlamp washers and wipers work, the windscreen wipers work, but the windscreen washers do not.

Any ideas?

If the headlamp washers work then the pump is OK, so it must be blocked pipe or jets.
