Default blower motor packed in

hey folks, bought a C30 2.0d at the start of February

had it a week and I was told blower/fan motor had packed in (fan blower stopped working, i noticed heat still came though Vents at 60mph and temperature of car was still fine)

i have an RAC warranty which apparently covers this sort of fault

thought great.... put it into a local private garage (which we put our workvans into a lot)

they stripped interior of car, diagnosed the problem - RAC warranty agreed to pay

got the replacement part from Volvo in Inverness took a few days

when they were attempting to remove old unit
they spoke to a Volvo mechanic and found out they need a specialist volvo tools?

Has anyone ever replaced these things before????

Private garage did not have said tools, so they gave it to Volvo Inverness (warranty company consented to this) took a while to book car in

was at Volvo two days ago - its now been 2 weeks since car heaters stopped working ; i am still without a car

who should i be shouting at here?

You should be shouting at the garage you trusted your car with to have the knowledge on how to do this , .. and yourself of course for giving a specialised job to someone who didnt know what it was all about ...
you shouldnt be shouting at the dealer as their contract is with the other garage not you .
There is a special tool which goes through the fan blades to extract the motor which has a bayonet type fixing .. even in a dealer it is a 5 hour job .

I did get a little irate with the Private garages secretary kind of feel bad because it was probably her boss/the mechanic that dropped it off at Inverness Volvo that didnt explain the situation properly

another weekend no car!!

I had a similar issue the day I bought our V50 from an independent dealer (motor that controls the heater flaps). I went straight to Volvo who advised replacement was a specialist job due to coding. The dealer that sold the car reluctantly agreed to let Volvo do the job.

As above, I would be shouting at the place you first took the car for attempting a job beyond their capability. Their labour rates may be cheaper, but for jobs like this, it's often false economy to take the car to someone outside the dealer network unless they are a Volvo trained specialist. So - not your fault, but a lesson learnt by you the hard way.

It does appear that the motors in the heating and ventilation system motors are a bit of an Achilles heel and hard to get to. As the dealers change them regularly, they have the job down to a tee.

Third pic is the climate unit with the blower motor and the flaps mechanism.
Not my car, but at least you can imagine what needs to be done to reach in there.

It is just possible to do it without taking all that out , but the special removal tool is vital . I didnt realise it was a LHD ..

These are pics I found on another forum and saved them on my HDD for future reference just in case ..

So it's an easier job on a RHD?

Strewth, thats 'built in difficult-ness' to a tee.
I have recently replaced the blower rheostat on my 'old' 70, thought that was a PITA, but in comparisson it was a doddle!
