Default XC90 Engine system service required

Good evening. I bought my 2009 xc90 D5 about 10 days ago. Two days after picking it up the Engine system service light came on. The code is showing as 042. Would anyone be able to tell me what is causing this. Thanks for your time.

Unhappy generic codes

I don't know if this helps or not as I am not an export but have seen generic codes before. However it does not even appear to be a generic OBD code which are in the format of a letter and four numbers. Suggest a re read is required..
(for info some generic codes starting containing 042 are catalytic converter related but it is essential you check the actual codes for your vehicle before spending money)
P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)
P0421 Warm Up Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)
P0422 Main Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)
P0423 Heated Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)
P0424 Heated Catalyst Temperature Below Threshold (Bank 1)

I have no idea re the code "042" but I have had the same fault a few days after the last two services on my 09 D5. The code reader clearly indicated that the oil level was slightly overfilled but sorry can not remember the number!!! A little oil removed and no more warning.

I recently had that if I remember correctly and it turned out to be the temperature probe in the DPF. Cost £160 to diagnose and fit a new one at an Indy. Good luck with it

I think the op is talking about the code generated by long pressing the trip reset when an "Engine Service Required" dash message.
They are beyond useless.
For example, clutch position sensor fault and mass airflow sensor faults both generate code 039 using this method, so you could think you're solving the fault by buying a £200+ MAF when you only need a £40 CPS.
Without even a basic code read, you could be led up a blind and possibly costly alley.

The op joined, asked his question and never came back so we'll never know.
The advice to you is the same though.
Get a proper code read done because guessing is expensive.
