I tried the wynnes on my 185, made no difference, in the end the egr valve came out for cleaning ( indie not me), but looking at the job now I dont see why you cant just remove the plastic pipe that connect the egr to the engine and clean it in situ , unless I'm missing something obvious

Wentworth's link in his post is the Euro 3 by the way. Same engine as the XC90. V70, XC70, S60

For the 163 bhp Euro 3 see the pdf

So I had a go and turned out to be a simple job, the EGR mixer body and pipes were not as bad as I was expecting, but boy did it need some cleaning after 11 years of carbon build up. Just did a 100 miles and feels good. Installed the blanking plate that Shadeyman and Bertye used.

EGR Mixer Before

Removed the Air intake cowl and air filter box to get better access

The EGR Intake Plenum

The Dirty EGR Mixer Body

The Big Clean Begins, Soaked in Petrol and Carb Cleaner Used

The Blanking Restrictor From Bertye

All cleaned up and looking as good as new

Profile shot showing size of plate

EGR Inlet Cleaned

EGR Mixer and Pipes Re-fitted

Job Done

the 185 is a bigger job to remove and clean, but it looks a straight forward job to clean in situ , i stand to be corrected , but if you remove the 90 degree induction pipe , that would give you access to clean the gunge out

SkipjackUK. you did a lovely job, i like the way you cleaned it looks like a new part. This may be a stupid question If your using a blanking plate does it make any difference if you leave it partly blocked.

you have to leave it partly unblocked or else it throws up a emissions service required message (at least on MY2003 euro3 163)

i got my blanking/restrictor plate from bertye1958 on ebay

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1211559079...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

thanks, give it ago it really is a easy and very satisfying job, I'm no mechanic and even i found it straight forward.

just make sure you tighten up the lower inter-cooler hose tight, its a dog to do with the pressure sensor attached as the jubilee clip restricts access. definitely easier if you remove the sensor and then tighten the jubilee with better access then reinstall the sensor.

i dont see the point in cleaning it if your just going to restrict it, with a plate. surely the soot is restricting it anyway? clean it n let it do its job again
