boot lock mechanism
Hello, this is my first thread, having taken ownership of EDE 73C at the start of the year. I'm so impressed with the wealth of knowledge on this forum, and the way it is sensibly moderated. It certainly helped me take the plunge with my Amazon, and it continues to be a pleasure to read about your experiences.
I was about to take some pictures yesterday, when I found the boot wouldn't open. It locks and unlocks fine. When unlocked, the large push handle feels completely loose - as if it is detached from the mechanism inside. I have the diagram (fig.41) from the Service Manual, and it shows a link (5) between the handle mechanism and the lock. Could this be the item that breaks or becomes detached? Can anyone help me with how to open the boot to repair the mechanism? Many thanks, Mike. |

Boot lock
Hi,the only thing I can think of is if you remove one of the rear light units ,you may be able to reach in and release the lock by hand,or using a screwdriver as a lever.
Good luck,Andy. |

Update,
Andy's suggestion was really useful. Taking off both rear lights allowed 'Mr. Long Arms' to reach the 4 internal nuts (2 from each side) which hold the chrome handle to the boot lid. Once the handle was off, the black push-in lock fell down inside the boot. This exposed the small hook on the release lever which when pulled up with a length of wire opened the boot. Hooray! The culprit was a sheared thread on the link bar between the lock and the release lever. Now, where to find a replacement..... |

CVI Automotive stocks both the hook (Part No 663889) and the shaft/bar between lock and handle (663888).
Also try Simon at Brookhouse Volvo. |

Mike - your Amazon MUST be the one I saw near Ewhurst on Saturday May 30th waiting to come out of a side turning. I was in my cream Volvo 164 going to Popham SBKV the day before the event to camp there, avoiding the shoppers in Guildford. If your car is also cream, it was me that waved !
As you are so close, you are of course going to the Cranleigh show on August 16th: if you'd like a ticket to park your car in the dedicated Volvo parking area there with about a dozen other older Volvo's send a mail to audakt@tesco.net as Audrey Old is the person to ask for a free ticket. It would be nice to do a photo shoot with a pair of identical-colour cars next to each other. Hope you can make it. Paul |

Hi Paul,
Yes, it was me. I did post this reply to your comment on the original 'Spotted' thread....... Hi Triple-S, Yes I saw you too....great to see others on the road. The junction was in Ewhurst, and I hail from Walliswood, just a mile or two down the road. EDE 73C was a recent purchase from Tony Whitton. He and his son, Robert, did a tremendous job in rebuilding the car pretty much from scratch. There are some pictures on Robert's website (of the California white two-tone). I am holidaying on the N York moors at the moment (not with the Amazon) but I'll post some pictures when I get back. ......but, as you can see from the above, EDE is currently without taillights and the boot lid is flapping ! Thanks for the heads up on Cranleigh......If I'm not away again I'll see you there. Cheers for now, Mike |

Hi jpws,
Thanks again for your help with the part numbers. VP Autoparts came up the best combination of price and availability, although CVI have the most comprehensive range. No reply to my email to Simon though. Mike |

Hi Mike,
Glad you found the parts you needed. I hadn't come across VP autoparts before. From experience, it's best to call Simon if you want a quick answer, although may take several attempts to get through. Jorn |

Mike (and Jorn perhaps?): Audrey is currently computerless as she is midway a "smooth transfer from Tesco to TalkTalk" (I don't think !). She can see mails but can't reply, so she rang me just then to say Mike mailed and she is attending to your Cranleigh ticket.
Computers huh - who'd have them.... Paul |
