850 R Project or Donor car.
Hi all,
It is with regret that I list my 850 R for sale. Bought this at Christmas as a project car, however, turns out there a bit too much for me to tackle. The more I do, the more I find that needs doing. Had I known the truth about the car before I bought it I would not have taken it on, however, one of you may wish to take this on before it gets sold for spares. It's 96 (N) estate in gun metal grey, auto, 208,000 miles, yes, the mileometer works, volon wheels, sun roof. Pro's: Heated seats front and rear, 7 seat conversion, Load cover, cargo nets, wind deflectors, towbar, original carpeted mats, 6 CD changer (needs cleaning), poly top mount. New front ABS rings, genuine fuel filter Cons: Engine worn (down on compression) and smokes on idle when warm, steering rack leak, abs and tracs lights on, air conditioning compressor ceased (but is currently disconnected), broken wheel bolt (will try to remove) usual rusty front wings, slight blow on exhaust, laquer peeling on bonnet and tailgate. No MOT. Also, the heater matrix seems to be on it's way out and new brake discs and pads will be needed soon. The car has loads of service history; had a new radiator in 2013. The car cost me £1,400, obvioulsy I know I won't get this back, but I would appreciate your best offers. I have been honest about the condition of the car, unlike the person who sold it to me. The car would need to be trailered away, but will start and drive. Will post pictures tomorrow. Thanks for looking.

I would agree, must be worth the £1400 you paid for it surely, these are fetching good money now even one that needs work, I have a 850R saloon that I bought as a project like yourself and sounds in similar condition, I have found more than I thought but decided to persevere and I am getting somewhere now. I guess they are just at that age. Anyway, good luck with sale!

I've done exactly the same,I have an 850R in Olive Green and manual,so less than 10 of those in U.K.
I'm not in the position to bring it back to its former glory yet but I will be one day,in the meantime it's staying in my ownership and certainly wouldn't sell it off cheap.Try and find an olive 855R in good or even bad condition, there isn't very many believe me I've looked. Keep it mate, like I said in the P.M. You will regret it. |

I too bought a rather unloved 'R' in December, travelled to Brighton-ish to collect it from Newcastle and have spent the last few months of weekends, dark nights and 'working from home days' restoring it. The thing with these cars is that once you start if you're anything like me you'll want it to be perfect so things like changing the front pads takes a month because you end stripping and rebuilding the calliper, which leads to the rest of them being done which leads to droplinks and then you may as well do the discs and so on and so on but its worth it if your hearts in it and it sounds like it is, I'm only about 50-60% through mine but its getting there. I've taken photos at each stage so I'll put a resto thread together at some point.
keep the faith man. |

I've got an Olive Green manual, a '97 one. Bought it for £1200, but realistically its taken about 3-4K to get it running as a reliable daily.
Glad to see prices are rising again - wouldn't surprise me that you could get back what your paid. They are like gold dust - haven't seen any in my area since I bought it 4 years ago. It's nice to see its a good investment! |
