Indicator Relay on S40
Hi
Does anyone know how I identify which relay is for the indicators. My indicators have just stopped working and although the fuse is ok I suspect it is the relay. I also have problems with the Hazard switch. After it came back from the MOT I discovered the switch was jammed in so I took it out and although I can press it in it doesn't work properly and I think I have caused the problem to the indicator relay. Would appreciate knowledge of how to identify which relay it is. Thanks |

The indicator relay if found in the driver's side footwell. It is by one of the fuse panels.
When taking it out I found it easier to undo the nut at the bottom of the fuse panel which will allow you better access. The relay is actually called a "flasher unit" and it has flasher written on it. I am at work at the moment but when I get home I will see if I still have the old one so I can give you a part number and maybe take a picture for you. The flasher unit controls the Seatbelt Warning light (this will still light up but not flash), the indicators and the Hazard lights. So if all three of these are not working then its most likely the flasher unit. One piece of advice, find someone on ebay selling bits for an S40/V40 and even if they aren't listing a flasher unit send them a message and ask if they have it. I did this and found one in 10 minutes for £5 postage included. |

yup, the flasher relay is the black sqaure unit on the bottum left corner of the relay panel behind the interior fuse box, drivers foot well, near the hood release.
The relay can be removed without taking anything else off and by hand, just need a good grip...(don't ask....). These aren't that expensive from a dealer either... and new is best seeing as your hazards run off it.... have fun.... |

If there is dust on the contacts in the hazzard switch from lack of use it will interrupt the current from the flasher realay to the indicator lights . Try pressing the hazzard button 20 or 30times see if that cures it .

What are those two relays above the flasher relay? Is the other one for the heated rear window?
