Windscreen washer problem
I've just bought an S60 and the washers fail to work on both windscreen and lights. The water bottle was empty but i've topped it up and checked fuses and relays. The wipers operate as intended and no water leaks when I press the switch, this sugggests to me all hoses are intact. How do I get acces to the pump to check it out and what tools do I need as I'm 400miles from home and only have a socket set, pliers and molegrip set. If necessary I'll buy some screwdrivers. All advice appreciated.

Remote ideas.
Have had nothing to do with cars of your model, so I can't offer direct advice on where the pump is.
If you have the radio and other noisy devices off and engine running, can you hear the pump when you activate washers, this will confirm electrical connections and give you an idea of where the pump is. Look around the resevoir if you can, you will either find the pump, or a hose feeding it. If you find the hose only, disconnect and check for flow. Washers died on old 240 when it was about 8 years old, accompanied by pump groaning. Plenty of water in resevoir. Removed pump and dismantled it (screwed together) to find that it had grown algi in the pump chamber and totally blocked it. I was able to clean this out and reassemble pump. Its still working 20+ years later. I have also known similar things to happen with pickup filters in feed hoses for remote pump systems, hence the suggestion to disconnect the hose and check for flow. Pumps used to be mounted on the resevoir, but get put in all sorts of odd places now. Pug 306 pump is insde the front guard cavity behind the plastic liner. Damned thing runs both ways as well, rotates one way to wash screen, opposite way to wash rear window. Getting too damn smart really. Good luck |

I had a similar problem when I bought my S60 up from a dealer. It had been sitting dormant for a while and everything was working with no leaks...but no water came out. What had happened was that the system had silted up for want of a better word. I got it flushed through at a better delearship than the place I bought it and all was fine after that. I used to drive a V40 at work and they were always prone to those kind of problems with the washer system too.
If it isn't that good luck sorting it |

Are the jets clean?Sometimes mine have blocked up after not using them for a while due, to winter screen wash being too strong.I now carry a pin to stick in the jet....Just a a thought.

Washer bottle
There is a fine mesh filter down the spout of the reservoir. It takes a small torx screw to take the filler spout off (screwed to the body). After that put your fingers down and pull out a blue ring with what seems like a condom on it!
Mine was completely silted up and stopping fluid going through. |
