Unhappy V70 Brake lights problem

Hi chaps, hope you can help. I have a problem with the brake lights on our V70. The high level one works all the time, the the two side ones are intermittant (with the 'Check brake lights' dash warning coming on. It also effects the trailer stop lights too.

Have checked the 15 amp fuse in the rear fuse box, replaced both bulbs and checked the connectors to the light clusters with no change.

Any help would be VERY greatfully recieved as intermittant fauults like these get VERY expensive if they end with a trip to the dealers .... :-(

Default V70 Brake lights problem

Hi JDS,

I've just got this problem as well on a 2002 V70 D5. Fuse is fine, bulbs are fine (Jeez but you need tiny hands to get into those bulb compartments!). It appears as if there was a recall in the States in 2004 concerning 2002 V70 Brake Light Relays (Reference R131). I'm going to try ringing the dealer tomorrow and see how I get on. Of course, I'm 5 months out of warranty!

Yes, the bulbs are a real PITA to get back in - my hands are covered in tiny scratches as there is not a lot of room in there! Please post your response from the dealer (mine in the UK is IMHO the least helpful I've ever met - not tried the local(ish) one in France yet though).

Hi,

Finally got it sorted (the delay was more to do with playing telephone tag than anything else). My car (born November 5th 2002) is a 2003 model and so not covered by the "service action". It was the relays though, and they only charged me for the parts (around 13 euros each plus VAT) so I suppose that's OK.

All working now so.

Hey Michael - did you get the part numbers? I have this "8651661" as the modified relays but am trying to verify it ... Cheers, and glad yours is all OK.

Well, an easy fix once got the relay, less than 2 mins work and all A-OK again. Total cost, £6.00.

Default Also a problem for auto box models

Thanks for posting your solutions, sounds like I have the same problem: intermittent brake lights (I can see if I reverse close up to the garage door and look in the mirror).

Pressing the pedal repeatedly seems to get them doing something, or just holding it down and waiting a few seconds. So, not bulb and fuse. Could be some sort of bad connection in the switch though.

The extra problem I have in my auto is that I can't get it out of 'Park' until the brake lights have fired up. Needless to say fast getaways usually aren't :-) It hasn't locked me out completely yet, but the fear is that I simply won't be able to change into 'Drive' at some point.

Anyway, thanks for the tips. I shall try and find out which relay I need to replace and do it. A fairly inexpensive thing to try.

Harry,
In your case if you cannot select park then it is a switch problem , the switch signal goes to the shift solonoid and also to the CEM (central electrical module) and powers the upper brake light only by hard a hard wire .
The CEM signals the REM (rear electrical module) to operate the relay that turns on the outboard brake lights ,
I could e mail you a US spec diagram but it maybe best if you find one for a UK version.

Smile V70 Brake Lights not working

Top brake light works fine but the other two not working at all. Bulbs and fuses checked ok. Lots of scratches on hands to prove it. I wondered where to get advice without going to Volvo Dealer. I found it on this site. Great stuff. I will check out the relays.
