More Speedo Issues
The speedo on my 760 GLE doesn't work and the fuel & temp gauges were damaged, so I bought a second-hand instrument cluster.
Fitted it and got these problems: RH Indicator tell-tale didn't work (checked bulb!) Engine cranked but didn't fire Seatbelt warning didn't work Reverted back to mine and all's well, engine fired & ran first time. Double checked and fault definitely with the new cluster. So on closer examination, Connector A in the new one had 1 extra copper strip, and two of the strips were combined into one. Speedo connections labelled S+, S-, +, - on the new one but S, +, - on mine. The new one came with a piece of chopped-off harness with only 3 wires attached (S+, + & -), different colour codes to mine though. Mine was stamped 1362380 1987 12 24 New one 3544202 1992 01 23 The new one also had a warning LED in the fuel gauge, mine didn't. The guy who sold me the new cluster said it came off a G-reg, saloon, mine is a G-reg estate. Also my harness has an extra black wire poking out of it with the other speedo wires, where does that go? After some faffing about got the original speedo to give a reading, but it indicates 60 mph when dawdling down the street!
I'm beginning to suspect the speedo head maybe from an earlier car with the speedo sender on the gearbox, is there any way I can tell? |

Oh this is fun!
Just had a chat with the guy who gave me the car. He pinched the speedo from an earlier car as the one that came with car went duff. He had the same problem as me (excessive speed indicated) so disconnected the speedo, which is why it didn't work when I got it. That's one red herring well and truly kippered. |

There are two different types of cluster. You can tell the two different makes by looking at the trip computer and seeing if the digits are seperated by a plastic lines or not. I'll try and find some photos tonight to show the difference

Another unit has entered the fray - the cluster that was fitted to the car when it was made!
Cluster 3 has these markings 3523431 1989 09 29 Wires + Red/Blue - Black S- Yellow/Black S+ Green/White I know the speedo doesn't work on #3, but am looking at the possibility of changing the speedo head with one of the others. |

From another forum
http://forums.turbobricks.com/archiv...p/t-58649.html It would seem that the ABS and Non ABS strobe wheels are different, hence the huge speedo error in Cluster #1 If anybody's interested in a discussion of GPS speedos, look here http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=14768 |

Fixed it
I managed to fit the speedo head from the cluster I bought into the cluster that came with car. The connections on the new one are totally different from the ones on the original, so I had to
It feels fine on the road, have been offerred the loan of a GPS to make sure. Concensus is that the cluster I bought really belonged to a 900 Series, so it looks like the head from a 900 will fit a 760 - but don't quote me! |
