P1800 Rev Counter not working
Hello
I am the proud owner of a 1963 P1800. See below It's dark blue with a red interior, but it has a rev counter that does not rev! I took it to a Automobile Electrical Specialist today to see if they could sort it out or give me some guidance on sorting it out. They had a look at the wiring diagram and the car and told me they couldn't find the tachometer sender that the distributor is connected to before it connects to the tachometer. Does anyone know where this tachometer sender is located and what it might look like? I suppose I can get a new or second hand one from somewhere? The wiring diagram just says "P1800 models" so I suppose there could be alternative layouts for such things. Any advice or suggestions warmly welcomed. Many thanks Charlie |

Welcome to the Forum! P1800s had two versions of tachs, differentiated in that the earlier ones had a seperate sensor module, usually located in front of the radiator. I have little experience with the earlier one. If this is the type you have, others will have to help. Later ones had the sensor internal...sensing was done without a direct electrical connection...the points wire strictly makes two loops through a bracket secured by a nut on the backside of the tach, which allows inductive coupling to transfer IGN pulses to the circuit. The circuits are known for quiting as the calibration potentiometer inside opens due to poor connection from age. I have writen this up before...see: http://www.sw-em.com/service%20notes.htm#Gauges ....but I suggest urge you first assure everything external to the tach is as it should be, before molesting the tach to gain access to its insides. Your car should have the earlier more complicated system. Best bet if you can find one is to fit a later rev counter if yours is playing up.

I took on the task of oppening. Canabalised a VDO unit from a BMW E30 and modified it to fit. Internals almost a 100% fit. Still a massive and delicate task. Can not see that it is modified, works of the distributer now,,,,,,,,,,100%
