turbo boost fault xc90 code ecm8605
can any one help me with a problem i have been having with my XC90 exc 2005 the service light keeps coming on and the car goes in safe mode. i have taken tha car into my local volvo dealer 5 times in the last six weeks and paid out over £1200 and the problem still keeps returning normaly when you are crusing at 60-70 mph with the revs aroung 2200 - 2500 orwhen you are climbing a steed hill etc. the proble may happen ones or twice a day then not return for another four days.
Volvo have carrired out a software upgrade (£130) peddle sensor (138.00)then a new front engine Mount with new vacum pipes(£460) then anew air intake hoses Nipple etc, system ckeck and rod threw (£220) then this week a new mass air flow sensor (380.00) then four good day later same problem got to the point of beleiving the dealer has not got any idea can anyone suggest what it could be, i have been told by a friends friend that it could be the ECG valve which could be sticking , they normal close of at around 2500 revs so the turbo starts to come on |

If you mean 6805 then it could be an air leak in the turbo boost valve pipes or engine mount vacuum system , easy to check with a vacuum pump/gauge . The next stage would be a turbo control valve as this could be restricted or sticking sometimes .
If all else fails the turbo calibration is likely to be out , ie the actual air flow through the turbo is not the same as the theoretical air flow calculated by the ECU . There wont be anything measurable wrong with the turbo but a new one will cure it ...

Hi Rockhopper, thank you for your response. Please be patient with me but I am still trying to find my way around the workingsof the forum also I am not the mechanic sort. When I take my XC90 back to the garage do I just say to them, 'someone had a similar problem and resolved it my fitting a new govennor' - will they know what I am talking about? Also, how much is a new governor?

Firstly - have you definitely got ECM6805? That was the only code mine threw up so was generally straight forward to diagnose. If it is, then as Clan outlines above, it is likely to be either an air leak in the vacuum system somewhere or a faulty solenoid valve. I went through a process of:
* get all vac lines checked for leaks (vac test or smoke test) * check engine pads for leaks * check / replace turbo control valve on air box (part no. 30611668 ~£30) * check / replace turbo governor valve on front of engine block (part no 30637251 ~£110) * last resort its the turbo I had vac lines checked at an indy and then replaced the TCV and governor myself - easy job. For parts, you can't do better than Simon at FRF: http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showth...&highlight=FRF |

Rockhopper - thanks for your very comprehensive, and quick, reply. I'll check the error code again and let my garage have a copy and hopefully it will end my saga. I will let you know the end of the story,
thanks again |

Hi, I went back to the garage they checked the error code again and yes it is error code 6805. Whilst the engineer was going through the diagostic options he changed the flow rate of the injectors. From memory there were three option settings and he changed to option 3. This seems to have stopped the error and the car is certainly reacting a lot quicker to the accelerator, I'm watching the comsumption rate ! Anyway I have backed this up with ordering a replacement turbo control valve but if the error does not represent after towing my caravan I'll probably return it. I am out with the van next week so I'll let you know how it goes, regards

I am reading this thread with interest as I recently had my D5 in for a service with my local Volvo specialist, he did the service (£280) and told me that I had a faulty Turbo Nozzle Valve which was the reason why the car was sluggish. He wanted to charge me £200 to replace it but I have resisted but the car is very sluggish - am I being had over?

They replaced my engine, but I don't have a clue whether they reset the injector-flow pattern to the correct value (I have "1" injectors, but don't know what they were before.) My issue: slow acceleration WITHOUT 6805 fault (but I have seen the "fuel-rail pressure too high" fault...dunno if that can be linked to a faulty injector grading in the ECU) Replacing or bypassing the governor (=turbo nozzle valve) is BTW the next thing I will try myself... |
