You have to hold the reset knob in then turn the ignition to the run position, now wait until the service light flashes and then let go of it. If it stops flashing and you let go it wont reset it. Thats assuming you car is mid 99 onwards, if its before that then you need to reset it with a computer and the car wont work with OBD2 interfaces.

I think the manual reset only works on Phase 2 models. The Phase 1s need a reset tool (electronics gubbins) which the dealers use to reset the light!

Is yours a twin headlight or single? If single, its a phase 1. Sorry!

http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/reset-40.shtml

Its says this in the Haynes Manual:-

Ignition switched off. Press and Hold the reset button for the trip meter. then switch on the ignition keeping the trip meter button down.

If the trip meter is released within 4 seconds of switching the ignition on there will be an audible sound to confirm that the light has ben reset.

If you hold the button longer as 10 seconds the light will flash but WONT be reset.

Hope it helps

I think this is wrong....I've just tried it today and you actually have to hold it UNTIL the service light flashes. Good old Haynes, eh?
