Which engine exactly?? 2.4D or D5??
Hi all,
I know from what people on here have said that the way to visually identify the difference between the 2.4D and D5 engine was the engine cover - all black for 2.4D and black/silver for D5. My Dad's 06 plate V70 2.4D SE (actually a MY07 car) has the black/silver cover, which initially made me think it was a D5. Looking at the 07 brochure (and phoning the dealer) has confirmed it is a Euro IV engine, which would essentially make it a de-tuned D5, am I right? The compression ratio is the same as the 185bhp D5, just the torque and power figures are lower. From what I gather there were two variations of the 2.4D available in the MY06 cars, the Euro III and IV. The Euro III has different internals and has a CR of 18.0:1, whereas the Euro IV has a CR of 17.3:1 which is the same as the D5 for MY06. For MY07 cars (introduced June 06 confusingly!) the Euro III engine was dropped leaving the Euro IV as the engine for both 2.4D and D5, just with two levels of tune. I'm not sure if there's a difference in the turbocharger fitted to the 2.4D / D5, although looking at the BSR PPC remaps they both come out at 220bhp / 455 Nm. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I couldn't find anything stating the opposite |

What I was saying is that, from MY07, the 163 is the same engine as the 185, just with a different tune. Prior to that the 163 came in two flavours. Just wanted to share what I'd found out! |

Which was all true, until recently:
http://www.carpages.co.uk/volvo/volv...e-17-02-09.asp D5 will soon be twin turbo 205bhp, 2.4D will be single turbo 175bhp. Although, knowing Volvo, the D5 will actually knock out around 220bhp at peak and the 2.4D will be around 200bhp at peak...
