hi folks i have cured the wind noise problem myself. had my xc60 serviced recently and told them about the noise around the wing mirror. they said said they knew about the problem and said they would fix it at the same time. sadly it was not the case!! the noise was gettin on mynerves and started at around 60mph on the driver's side til 80mph when it suddenly disappears.
recently i was driving and had the window open and i was resting my arm on the sill, i noticed the noise stopped when my hand was in a certain spot. where the arm(underside) of the wing mirror meets the door there is a gap. this flaming gap is the culprit!! it's the width of the arm - about 8cm - i used duct tape to cover this gap and hey presto THE NOISE is GONE!! hallelujah!!!! this should be called the CHI fix after myself!! i'm going to use a silicone sealant later because the tape eventually comes off. SPREAD the news to the masses, a cure has been found. peace and quiet at last

Sounds great I wonder if you would mind posting a photo of the duct tape in place so we can see exactly how you cure it

Thanks

And no doubt a very aesthetically pleasing solution. Just love a car bandaged up with duct tape.

I've never joined any forum or online discussion group in my life. I've never used facebook, twitter, blogged or anything else that now exists...
... however, I've received my new XC60 and the whistling/air noise from 45mph onwards has driven me mad enough to go beyond emailing.
Chi, if your solutions works (however unsightly) then I may just be able to keep the car. I'll try it as soon as I get some duct tape. Otherwise great car (except for the slow boot).

I used this tape about 6 months ago and it's still in place AND the wind noise has gone. I did not want the dealer to be trying to fill the space with butyl mastic and making a mess. I am prepared to have the car not looking perfect as long as the wind noise is gone.

Thumbs up

I dont get so much as a whistling noise from my car but a whooshing noise but I will try the duct type tape to see if it improves the whoosh. I thought the tape might be somewhat unsightly but unless it was pointed out I doubt if it would even notice. If it works ok I may try some black silicone sealant as a more permanent solution. Thanks for the advice.

Just go to the dealer. They will use a special putty INSIDE the mirror. It will fix the noise and you won't see it. I've had it done; in fact I think I was the first person to suffer this problem. It works! You can't sell a car with tape all over it.

Thanks for the info but there have been posters who said their dealers made a hash of the job - I just did not want to take that risk. I have tried to get butyl mastic removed on another car and it's an absolute pain to remove as it sticks to everything!
When I come to sell the car the tape will obviously have been removed.

Would've though silicone would be a better bet (providing one can get the colour one want's), it should come off easy when not needed.

If it helps my wife was watching when they did it. She said it was like kids play-dough and they squashed it all around where the wires go from the mirror into the car. It didn't sound like messy mastick (sp?) gun or anything - then they just put the cover back on again. If they mess it up, they have to redo it. I'm sure you'll be fine.
