Default Seat Belt fraying

Has anyone else noticed that the seat belt wears a groove in the B pillar. This will eventually cause the seat belt to fray and may fail an MOT because of it. Anyone got a solution? Does Volvo Know?

This has happened on my 1999 V40.

Grooves about half an inch long have been worn on both sides and the belt edges have begun to fray.

It passed the MOT test a few weeks ago so must be OK at the momoent.

However it must only be a matter of time before they get too bad.

Hi. yes mine has worn through the b pillar covers on both sides. Come on Volvo, not very good is it. Never heard of this problem on any other car. Not a particulary difficult job to replace these covers but surely a job that should not have to be done in the first place.

mornin all

yeah both of our V40s gave this problem, although i think it will came to a natural halt when its wears so far down and settles into "your" routine of pulling the seat belt out.

once it reaches that point a little wet and dry on a match (technical i know) will round the slit off and stop the belt fraying even more , i hope.

as for replacing it, take care, you have the ABS sensor in the seat and the and the "firework" thing behind the B post.

ok waffle over

My V40 is at the stealers for a 110,000 mile service, MOT and new driver's seat belt (for the reason specified in this thread)

They've just phoned me up and the conversation went something like this:

Stealer: There's a problem fitting your seat belt - its catching on the trim - you really need a new peice of trim.

Me: That's a known design fault with V40s and S40s will I have to pay for it?

Stealer: Is it? Yes you will it will be £41

Me: Will you charge for fitting it

Stealer: No - it will be included in the seat belt fitting charge.

Me: Have they redesigned it to avoid this problem?

Stealer: No I shouldn't think so.

Me: Have you got them in stock?

Stealer: No - it will take about 3 days

Me: Can you do the MOT without it

Stealer: We can but will then have to remove the seat belt later to fit the trim

Me: So you'll charge me twice?

Stealer: I'm afraid so.

Me: I think I'll keep the old trim, thanks

The moral is: Get the emery cloth out and rub down the edge of the seat belt slot ASAP!

Default metal sleeve

prevention is better than cure, i fitted a metal sleeve into the groove, much smoother to pull belt out, and no wear from plastic.

Mine does it on the passenger side, my girlfriend is only short so put it down to the fact that she pulls it at a lower angle than it actually allows hence the wear!!!

Mine had a new seat belt fitted (at vast expense by Pillings) because it was frayed (MOT failure) it had already cut a slot in the trim - I haven't replaced the trim but the new belt hasn't frayed............. BTW Pillings didn't offer to replace the trim, not even to inflate the already outrageous bill.
