1998 Volvo C70 2.3 T5 GT Coupe
Owned between 2009-2014. A truely stunning, powerful and comfortable car. Will be missed

Quite a different beast to my old 850. A lot quieter and more refined but not much else seems to keep up if I put my foot down but due to the quiet engine you'd hardly notice! Well apart from when the front squirms around trying to put down 240bhp! (Made a lot better now the trackings been sorted!)

Engine Specifications:
  • Standard T5 240bhp
Engine Misc.:
  • Yep its got those.
Turbocharger & Induction:
  • High Pressure Turbo... <mr burns>excellent</mr burns>. Good for bringing a grin to my face.
Fuel & Tuning:
  • Er.... Super Unleaded.
Exhaust:
  • Yep its got one. Chromes gone a bit manky in places.
Drivetrain:
  • Front wheel drive arg.
Weight reduction & transfer:
  • I don't think so, this things damn heavy.
Suspension, wheels & tyres:
  • Nice wheels as standard. The GT pack is supposed to have lowered suspension but it looks higher than my old 850 (which is also factory lowered)?
Interior:
  • Lovely full beige leather.
Exterior:
  • Its turquoise.

Wish the wheels would stay this clean... Big and beautiful ooo-er Curvacious. A welcome sight after coming back from the dentists...

AndyPants Hi,

The hunting of the revs does sound a lot like a problem with the ETM, although if its got the yellow sticker - I think thats typically a sign its already been replaced once. For it to fail again would be quite unusual I would think. I no longer have my C70 so I can't check but maybe giving it a clean and checking everything else is ok would be the first step. I don't think the C70 with ETM has an idle motor but I can't remember.

The issue with the lack of boosting and dump valve like sound could very will be that an intercooler hose has popped off or split. I had the same happen to mine and I found that one of the jubilee clips at the bottom of the intercooler - an elbow - had completely rusted through and the hose had popped off. A jubilee clip later and all was well again. Who knows it might even cure your hunting problem?

Not sure about the smoking of the exhaust, could be a number of things but I'd check the PCV system incase thats blocked. Certainly well worth getting it so

cmbnewi222 Hi aNDY,

I have recently bought a 1998 C70 t5 p1, something I've wanted for a while.

I bought the car at a reasonably cheap price with the intent of spending money on it to bring it back to it's former glory.

I have a question and if anyone can help I'd very much appreciate it.

The revs dip below 1k as low as 500rpms then jump up again, hunting basically.

Am I right in saying the ETM needs either cleaning first and see how it goes or have it refurbed? Its the yellow stick Magentti one.

Also as i get to around the 3,000 rpm mark and the turbo seems to hiss, sounds to me that it has a dump valve however it doesnt and it doesnt boost properly, hesitant to be honest.

Could this be either a vaccum pipe from the turbo having a split in it and would this cause smoke from the back of the exhaust on full throttle and a smell of oil?

I am new to these cars however have the money to replace the parts and have plans for a remap from BSR to bring it to 294 BHP but need to make sure the necc
