Having spent £500 on top of the price of my car last year for a 5 year warranty, I think this time tomorrow it will have paid for itself. My car is in for a new steering rack and associated bits. I have no real idea of the actual cost of such work using genuine parts and at a Volvo specialist, but I am glad that it is covered.

Having spoken to another mechanic some time ago about the trouble he had in convincing the warranty people to cough up for an automatic gearbox job which subsequently cost his customer over £2000, I am more than grateful for the cover this warranty has afforded me. I am sure that warranty companies will do anything they can to avoid paying out (it is after all another form of insurance).

Having bought rubbish cheap warranties in the past in order to get another £50 off the price of the car, I am glad on this occasion that I followed the very good advice of the garage from where I bought the car (Phil Whittakers near Slough - credit where credit due)

The additional cost of a warranty on top of a car's purchase price or running costs can, I think, be hard to swallow sometimes, but a good warranty can readily pay for itself - especially at dealer prices. In the past, both myself and my Dad have seen the cost of our Volvo warranties easily recouped through failed components which have then been replaced under the warranty.

That's pretty good value! I bought a three-year warranty on my R-reg V70 R AWD when I bought it at the end of 2000. In the event I had no major mechanical problems in that period, and unfortunately I decided not to renew it. Six months later the car needed a new steering rack, which cost me a tad under £1000...

AAMOI, who is your insurance with, and when did you take it out?
