someone i know is always giving me stick for owning a volvo. old mens cars etc etc. they have just bought a brand new kia magentis, 2ltr petrol i think, (don't laugh just yet), and are bragging "mine has air con, yours hasn't,mine has leather seats yours hasn't,mines brand new your isn't". I don't particularly like this person so i will be editing this message before i show it to them. After all this bragging i made the simple point that his car will not look or drive as well as mine when and if his reaches the age and mileage of my car (1993 140k). His reply was "course it will, good cars these". can anyone back me up please?

He he he. I don't think you really need any back up do you? I'd much rather be using my 1987 245 GLE than any Kia whatever the age and spec.

i'd mention the word 'depreciation' to him.. korean cars aren't renound for thier reliability, or build quality, and they are worth pence second hand.

it will plummet like a rock and be worth about 2.5k in 3 years time. They are built out of stickle bricks and plasticine 'nough said they are nails and should be taken off the road for being offensive and generally crap

A friend of mine asked whi I paid 9K for my 98 V40 2.0T (in 2002 - Dutch cars are expensive) with 140KM on the clock when he only paid 2.5K for a 1.4 Fiat Brava one year older with less KMs. He didn't seem to think that the quicker, roomier, safer held and refuses to beleive it has better builf quality. He'd had the car gfor one week and the rear wiper had fallen apart internally - we'd just been looking at this when he made his comments...

Even now (7 years old, 185KMs) TRADE value on my V40 is double what he paid for his :)

And still he thinks it was a waste of cash...

Check out "Carsurvey.org" on web for reviews. 1 review not complimentary. "Honestjohn.co.uk" has positive report relating to buying new but no info on snags in use. "Parkers.co.uk" does not seem to have report. Also, what is Magentis like in accident? What are other Kias like in crashes? I know that fuel economy is dreadful in Hyundai Sonata and Hyundai Trajet People Carrier.

hope this is helpful

Volvo vs Korean (or Italian) cars ...... it's a bit like comparing a King size 4 poster bed with a folding camp bed.

I've heard it said that ignorance is bliss, maybe that's the explanation although I don't remember the seats of my first car (1984 polo) being very blissful. Volvo seats on the other hand ......

Did this guy not see the Top Gear review on Korean & far eastern cars. Only one of the little cars was any good (Hyundai Getz) and that was almost the same price as european super-minis. All the big cars had v. high depreciation - something like 15% when you drove it out of the showroom and a total of 35% inside 18 months.....
Fuel consumption was poor - generally you would be better off buying a three year old euro car for the same cost - propbably lower servicing costs as the parts are cheaper and easier to get hold of especilly if something obscure gives way.

I'll stop the logical explanation now - It makes more sense just to lol :-}:-) :D

Try this on him. His car is to motoring what King Herod was to child welfare.

I had a look at one of these in the States last month

http://www.kia.com/amanti/index.php

Good looking car and seemed well built. I work in the Audio Visual industry and whereas people laughed at brands such as LG and Samsung previously, these companies are doing some of the most innovative and best performing gear on the market now. Don't write off the koreans, that Sony vcr that you paid top money for was built by LG goldstar, Sony have never made a vhs vcr but instead chose to buy in OEM - the moral of the story being.....
Hope you still like your Sony
