Has anybody any thoughts on the use of fully synthetic oil in older engines, say 80k + miles.

"Honest John" in the Telegraph often advises people to change to this, particularly if they want to keep the car for a long time.

Any comments on this would be appreciated.

I think you need to refer to the year of manufacture of an engine not the mileage it has covered. There are many cars that cover 80K in around 5 years, changing to fully synthetic is not a problem. With engines from the 70's and before it becomes a debateable subject. One camp will say that you should use the type of oil the engine was designed around; another will say use the newer better oil.
