View Full Version : Torque steer?

Hello,

I posted this in the 400 section, but it's also a general question - what causes torque steer to worsen?

I drove our 480 for the first time in six months last weekend, and it's got a lot more torque steer than last time I was behind the wheel. You can almost change lanes with the throttle pedal!

Any suggestions as to why the change might have occurred?

As the drive shafts are of unequal length (there being no centre idler shaft as on Lancias) torque steer will worsen as wear increases on one of the shafts. In UK this is usually the left hand one, and is associated with suspension wear on that side.

Nearly all FWD cars without an idler shaft (to equalise the drive shaft lengths) will exhibit this behaviour as wear increases. Check and replace suspension components as necessary.

All the best, Peter.

Yes. We have just replaced the front suspension (springs and dampers) - maybe this was the cause of the driveshaft wear of which you speak.

Looks like we're stuck with the problem, for now! Thanks for clarifying, Peter.

Hi.
Interesting..... last time I looked at my C70 I swear the drive shafts were of equal length, and there is a definite shaft in between one of them and the gearbox.
Are V70s not the same in this respect?

Dan.

Now you've changed the springs and shocks have you had the toe and camber and tracking set back up?
If it's out it well make the car drive dreadful

Just realised you are talking about a 480. D'OH! :-)

It has been a long day.

A worn engine mount can increase torque steer as energy is used to lift up the engine on one side. I speak from experiece.

Just curious, but do all 850/70s have equal-length drive shafts?

This is all interesting. No, we didn't have realignment carried out... I would have done with my V70, but it didn't occur to my parents!

And I'll have a look at the engine mounts.

Thanks all...
