I have recently purchased the car so I don't know if this noise has just started, or it has always had it and I only just noticed. It's a 2001 auto and is my first car with an auto box so I am not too familiar with the workings of automatic transmissions.
If you have the car in park and push the footbrake you can hear a noise from the transmission tunnel and also feel the knocking if you hold the gear lever or the handbrake. The knocking sounds like something is tapping on the inside of the centre console trim rather than a metallic knock. If you put the car in drive/neutral/reverse and push the footbrake it doesn't do it. The noise almost sounds like something like a cable is slack inside the transmission tunnel when the car is in park and lets something tap the plastic somewhere around the centre console. Any ideas? ( I have also posted this in the s60 section in the hope of some replies either way)
