Hi Icky,

Welcome to the forum.

The main issues with the pre 2007 models include failed AWD systems due to a failed splined shaft and wheel bearing failures.

One way of checking the AWD is by getting underneath and trying to rotate the rear drive shaft by hand.

You may notice uneven tyre wear around the shoulders of the tyres to. This is almost always due to misalignment (www.alignmycar.co.uk), too low tyre pressures (we recommend inflating to the eco pressure, around 38psi) or a faulty tyre. Many members have had the most problems with the standard fit Continentals and soon change them.

If you look in the XC90 section there are some really good posts on tyres and the AWD faults. In the Articles section there are some good How To Fix guides too.

Best of luck.

Jim.
