I have recently been informed of some very tidy, verging on mint, older Volvos for sale.

These cars were acquired by an independent Volvo specialist on behalf of Volvo Uk for use in a promotion for the launch of the V60 and since the photo shoot have now been released for sale. They are all very good examples and are nigh on immaculate (I've seen them all) and would suit anyone interested in acquiring an example for preservation or a a classic second car. As far as I know they will not be offered with a warranty, but the specialist concerned has stated that they will offer support to any buyer as they do not wish to leave anyone 'high and dry' if the cars suffer any problems. In my opinion these cars need to go to a Volvo enthusiast and be kept for prosperity as they truly are exceptional. The 240 in particular is very nice and a rare model, and the '89 740 has 44 service stamps from the same Volvo main dealer!

Here's the copy of the e-mail I received giving some of the details;

The website we use is www.swanwickmotorcompany.co.uk and I'll ensure that all of the cars are listed on there by the weekend.

Please accept my apologies for the delay in sending the info ( I started this e-mail on Monday! ), I 've been out of the office for a couple of days.

Mnay thanks for your assistance, it's greatly appreciated.

Photos would be helpfull But you could hardly call them clasic cars!

Photos are available on the link in the thread (http://www.swanwickmotorcompany.co.uk/)

I suppose it depends on your definition of classic. The 240 is almost 30years old and the 740's are all over 20. They are a classic design so they could be called a classic. Just because they don't require new bodywork every year, and the points to be reset after after every trip like some other '70's designs doesn't mean they can't be classics. I know what you mean though, they are still enough about in regular service that they don't seem to be considered a second car used only at weekends like most classics. Perhaps Future Classic would be a better term?

I for one would certainly call them clasic cars.Albiet with two S's.Maybe some of the newer ones aren't quite there yet but give them time and I'm sure they will be.

A classic in "my" mind is something that is instantly recognisable and reliable and has stood the test of time and continues to do so.

This club and forum wouldn't exhist if the cars weren't worth talking about.Try looking at the DAEWOO owners club! I did and only two members are always there. Most join and find out what's wrong and how to fix it and never come back.

Regards Brian.

I think like a lot of dealers they're using the "classic" tag simply to try to extract a few more quid from gullible punters.

If someone came on here looking for £1500 for a mid 90s 940 or 850 I can imagine the reaction they'd get.
They're quite nice, low mileage (not always a good thing IMO) old Volvos but they ain't classics.

classiccars magazine would disagree with your interpretation of Volvo not being a classic car, their most recent publication October 2011 page 141 lists all models from the Volvo stable they think are classic. Their model spotlight being the 164.
A 940 is not a classic although the 940 sport is very desirable the 850 T5-R and R I would consider a classic and £1500 would be considered cheap.

Was wondering the other night, what is it that makes a car a classic car? Any body know?

According to the men in flat caps anything that breaks down and leaves a pool of oil after it. I saw a Mk1 Mondeo the other day and it was absolutely pristine and stood out amongst the more modern stuff.I'm not in any way saying it is a classic but IMO any older car that is well loved and kept nice always seems tp stand out.Even more so when there are not many on the road anymore. When was the last time you saw an Opel Manta?

39188 I know its a Vauxhall,But when I was 18 I wanted one so badly!

Most of the people who claim things arn't classics are those who have been taking their 1979 MBG to shows since 1989.

There are 340's older than MGB's, yet they arn't classed as classics by many as they arn't British Leyland or Triumph ;)

Given our "chuck-it-away" society and the built in obsolescence of new cars, I reckon any car that reaches 10 years these days is a bl00dy classic.!!!..LOL

I agree. When I read the classic car magazines,as Moosejaw pointed out when they argue about what is a classic car it gets VERY heated. My 850 is a classic in my eyes! :) Its my car and I can call it what I want. Even if it is a tatty example. Its a damn better car than some of these "classics" with tons more character.I also used to have a 360 GLT and if I could afford to run two cars I would have another tomorrow.

I also saw one of these the other day and again it stood out a mile! 39223

PS I know my 850 isn't a classic! :)

A car is a classic when any one or more of the following is true:

1. Someone else has it and you want it.
2. It's displayed in a windy field with a detailed history printed out and stuck in the windscreen.
3. It's up for sale for far more than anyone with any sense would pay for it.
4. It was made in Britain prior to 1980 and has a wooden dashboard.
5. It's design makes even non-petrolheads go 'Oh that's nice'.
6. It's hired out for weddings.
7. It's got round headlights.
8. You can insure it for less than £100.
9. Your Dad had one new.
10. You learnt to drive in one.

Cheers

Jack

There's 2 rather ruff looking Manta's here in Hereford, they really look only fit for the scrapyard though!

my car is a classic. Why? Simply because every time I get in and drive it makes me smile. Sometimes even grin like a kid with a new toy. and thats after three years ownership. ( 855 t5 auto)

Would offer 750 for the 244, but I know that is not enough, would have a good home with 9 other 240's, a 940 and a v50 to keep it company!

I phoned up my insurer yesterday about insuring an older car. I was asked if it was a Classic and I replied that I did not think so. She then stated that as it was over 20 years old, in the eyes of the insurer it was a Classic. The price quoted was very good so I will agree with her!

Had one of these in white, new in 1989, BX16V.

However these magazine guys have opinions (they tend to be the opinion formers), we have ours, and I'm inclined to agree with the view that if it's of an age, say 10yrs+, and cared for then it's a classic.

The magazines don't regard the 740 as a classic, but I certainly think my two '86s are.

Late response to an oldish thread but great pub subject.

Metal bumpers. That's my guideline.

My 1966 Amazon - classic (metal bumpers).

My 1990 460 Turbo? - old (plastic bumpers).

A 'classic' car is classic the day it is built and remains a classic throughout it's life. A car that was a non classic the day it was built, e.g. a Triumph Herald, does not become a classic as it gets older. I remember in the 1950's i had a series 2 Morris Oxford, it was an awful car when it was nearly new and can only have got worse with age, but you will still find it paraded at classic car meets as though it qualifies as a classic.
I personally don't think any model of Volvo can be termed a classic, but I still love them.
