does anyone hany any recommended insurers apart from the generic comparison website rubbish?

or have any knowledge of the insurance 'game' to help me with my query?

I've had an S60 since 2004.. always cost me about £550 F/c
Been Sorn'd for a year due to company car, expecting redundancy so kept.
Also have 4x4 which is on specialist ltd miles policy (only a caravan tugger)
I've now put my 9yr NCD on the 4x4 as it was getting too dear also!

Prices I'm getting now on the S60 are £1000+ TPFT!!
Now selling it. :-(

any suggestions?

Could be worth looking into a "Multi-car" policy?

Good grief,,,£1,000+!!! Why so much? Are you quite young, or are there any other reasons for such a high quote? If you ask me, these insurance companies are nothing short of crooks. Every man (and woman) and his dog are being hammered by these sharks lately. Robbing bar stewards.

£1000+ is normal for most under 25 years of age, and rising...what gets me is that half of it is due to my postcode....if i where to use my work address it knocks £300 off my total price....maybe ask work for permission to use their address as your inusrance - also check to see if it's allright with the insurance company..

is mum + dad on the polocy too? mum reduces my polocy by a meagre £50 p/a dad reduces it by £25...

also how many miles are you confessing to doing - not that its any of their business, but i found that telling them my actual mileage - 50k p/a + - drastically increased my polocy, and that they normally do unlimited mileage insurance anyway...i told them approx 10k miles p/a and it didnt come out that badly price-wise.

ps no claims is use-able accross all polocies i thought? eg: if i insure one car with one polocy, i can use my 5 years n/c on that and at the same time use my 5 years n/c on another car with a different insurer

have you rang round loads of insurance companies so far? try volvo club insurance, direct line, elephant - directly?

also if you look in FAST magazine or most car related magazines, there are loads of insurance companies specializing in young people...also look around in town, theres often small insurance companies there that arent quite big enough to get into the publics eye

try doing fully comp instead of TPFT - apparently insurers think people who only insure TPFT aren't going to be careful with their cars as their not bothered about it. Also dont put that your car is parked on a drive, I think garaged or parking on street works out cheaper.

Every time me and my wife insure cars, tpft is always more expensive than fully comp!

Bump up your estimate of the value of the car. It will make no difference to any payout made. Companies seem to believe that if you have a 'cheapo' car then you will not be careful with it.

a few companies accept company car bonus,if you can get a letter on headed paper saying you have driven for them for x number of years without incedents, then this will help, if you have a female partner(wife) then a few will mirror the number of years she`s been driving(not law yet to treat as equal),if you insure the 4x4 with Aviva they will allow you to use your bonus ,as you can only use one bonus per policy,if you do use it other than that acceptable by the company, its fraud, and you won`t be insured, although we have a few customers in Leeds area,i`m not always the cheapest, just the best, lol.malcolmk (thieving scum!or broker what ever people want to call me)

malc,
its not *usually* the brokers fault tho, its the ins companys/underwriters.
i bet if you made 2% of what they do,,you'd have retired years ago,,,

tho i do reserve the right to use such words with a certain firm of brokers i have had the misfortune to encouter.

OP

forget "online compare this" sites, go find some of the smaller brokers , (like malc) local to you
advantage insurance are also worth a bell ,
Address. Advantage Insurance Centres, 4-6 Silver Street, Bury BL9 0EX
Tel.0161 762 4413
garry j riding being the boss there.

Smaller brokers will imho and experiance give you not only the best prices, but the best in customer service and care.

aviva i wouldnt advise Anyone to touch with a long pole, due to events and there history of being,,, well you wouldnt go back to them once you have to deal with there claims dept,,or do anything more than pay....

just to let you know that my insurance company said that if i parked my car in the garage it was more of a risk because the garage could catch fire!!!!!!!!!!!!! wtf!!!!!!!
i used to kept a clasic sports car in there so it is alarmed and has a security bollard in front of the car and no flamable liquids stored in there.......
there really are a law unto thereself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Try adding a couple of older family members on, generally goes down, especially if they are women who have held their license for a while. Experiment on the likes of confused.com with this as it's easy to work out where the sweet spot is. For me it's two additional drivers, knocks about £300 off, any more than the reductions aren't as big.

Try tweaking your job title, I found that changing mine from personal assistant to care worker made my quote £80 cheaper.

I also have a mate that lost his job a couple of months ago, after a few weeks he thought he'd tell the insurance company, thinking that if he took off "commuting to a single place of work" it'd make it cheaper, it actually added almost £400 to his annual price.

If saving money is all you want to do try swift cover as they are online and give me much cheaper quotes than anyone else.

Moneysupermarket are one of the best search engines to try.

You're quote seems very expensive but last year I was paying £900 a year on my Legacy GTB and come renewal time the same company wanted £2700 with an extra year's ncb!! I called up and the woman confirmed it wasn't a mistake!

I ended up getting insured through swiftcover for under £700 so it goes to show the price variations between companies.

They give me much higher quotes than Elephant e.g. Elephant £615, Swift Cover £1,674.90.

Without sounding cheeky, are you under 25?

I always found elephant and admiral far cheaper than anyone else until I hit 25, but swift were £400 cheaper for me. My best friend also finds them much cheaper

I spent all day yesterday ringing around and on the net and using admiral multi car was by far the cheapest, have got both the T4 and misses car insured for a mear £10 more than hear renewal quote. The cheapest i could find for the T4 was £1250 but using the multicar policy got it for £706.

Nope, I'm 30. I imagine their database tells them Liverpool = bad and that is that whereas Admiral / Elephant are more specific on the actual postcode.

That or it's all just random.

The one insurance company that always seems to give the best service these days (according to Auto Expres surveys) is the NFU.

In saying that I always use Direct Line

XC90 D5 SE Lux Premium

Just paid £159 for 12 months fully comp plus £26.50 legal protection

Mind you I am 62 (just) and only do 8-9000 miles/year and live in rural SW Scotland

I see lots of you think that I'm under 25.. ;-)

I'm 37!! , with 8yrs NCD on Volvo. 1 Year from last year 4x4. 2 years could be proven from claim free company car. 1 claim in 2008 - attempted theft - my fault apparently? Means I cant 'mirror' against other car.

I'm led to believe you can only use NCD on ONE car?
Can someone confirm this?

The £1000+ is with my wife as add driver and 0 NCD. Just cant get it any lower and as a result the S60 is off. I cant afford to keep 2 cars and it just wont tow my caravan.

Leeds postcodes are pants on insurance, discovered that if I insured it at mum+dads (which I wont as law abiding!) it would only be £600. so paying a 'leeds premium' of £400 apparently.

I will take note of some suggestions on here and see if I can change things a bit. Thanks so far for views.

UPDATE - adding my dad puts it UP!

Still looking at £1000+ - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/160652948897?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649

Jock, ask the insurers if you can use NCD more than once...i use mine across a few cars/polocies and none of them have said "you cant use your NCD on more than one polocy" if it wasnt allowed, im sure the insurers would be bundling ontop of me by now..

Have you tried getting your insurance through one of the banks? I got mine via Barclays last year and it was the absolute lowest quote that I could get with all/most of the extras included: £1,394 with 9 years NCD (the maximum they allow or accept).

Moneysupermarket, goCompare, etc. started out fine, their initial quotes were around £694 with the bare minimum of coverage, via companies like Elephant and a few other "low cost" insurers. However, the more you tweaked, the more expensive it became, even when I went back and entered my original specs. The Elephant quote went up to £1260 in the space of 20 minutes (with options stripped out), despite nothing having changed! Aviva was similarly exorbitant, they wanted £2204 and Volvo's own insurance company wanted a very hefty £3142. Also, the comparison sites spammed me to no end, despite my opting out of such messages and even after I asked them to stop.

I can't see things improving come renewal time next year. I'll start shopping around in earnest come December.

I second the suggestion to try a few independent brokers, they may be better.

It is true for most insurance companies that you can only apply your NCD to one vehicle.

The way around it is to have a multi-car policy from the like of Admiral etc...
