Hi all

I am importing a S60 2.4 (non-turbo) from the Netherlands. I am aware that in order to register it here I have to change to fog light, headlights and speedo. I have spoken with VOSA who have advised that regarding the speedo a overlay is acceptable for an analogue speedo so long as it is properly installed. However, the front lights need to be completely replaced apparently. I live in Aldagate, London, and have been calling some Volvo specialists in the London area to get quotes for the work. One garage is quoting £669 per headlight, and a total quote of £2448 (almost more than the car is worth!)! Anyone been through this and have any advice, or can someone recommend a place that does this type of work at a more reasonable cost?

If possible I would like to get the work done at a place that can issue the relevant certificate so that I then don't need to have the car seperately tested by VOSA at additional cost.

Any help you can offer would be great!

Many thanks

Tom

1. You will need Certificate of Confirmity (if the car is younger than 10 yrs) from the manufacturer. Call Volvo Sweden for help with this.

2. No import Tax nor Duty to be paid if the car was previosly regged in Holland (free movement in EU and all that).

3. Speedo does not need to be changed, but should display MPH. There are companies out there who will make a sticker that looks just like the normal speedo and glues on top of the KM/H one. An easier thing may be to find a new speedo housing from the scrappy or on eBay (I bought one for the 700 for £12!). Just make sure the part is for your engine/gearbox/wheel size combo.

4. Headlights. Tricky one but in my experience, they do NOT need to be changed. The important thing is that the "kick-up" to the right (on LHD cars) needs to be cut off for the UK market. Otherwise you will blind every singel meeting car on the road. Easiest way to do this is to apply a up-side-down Euro stickers for the headlights. Once this has been done, you will no longer blind anyone and MOT will accept it.

5. Once work done, MOT time (they will do the MOT on the VIN number).

6. Insurance, MUST be done on the VIN number.

7. Visit local DVLA office with application forms, original insurance (clearly showing car is insured on the VIN number), money etc. DVLA homepage has all info what's needed.

8. Drive safely and enjoy your car!
