1.8 Head

[1995Volvo460]

Hi,
as the username suggests i own a 1995 phase 2 460 - a SPi 1.8
I have heard a lot that the 400 series engines are similar or the same in some ways as older renault engines - is this the case?
If so, would it be possible to put a renault 19 16valve head onto the 460 1.8?
If not is there any other places i can start modifying the engine of the 460?

Hi..
As far as im aware, you wouldn`t be able to put a 16v head on your particular model, as its only a singlepoint injection. You may be able to do it on a 2.0i engine, the B20f as it`s a multipoint injection. It wouldn`t be as simple as that though, as you would have to change all the engine management system too. I did read somewhere a long while ago however on another forum, that a lad took a 1.7i engine from a phase 1 440, fitted it and put a R19 16v head on it, chipped it and put it in a Clio for racing! What a waste! So im sure if he can do all that, you could do something too.

You can visit www.volvotuning.co.uk - im not sure if they cater for the 440, but they may. Also www.kalmar-union.com , they may be able to help too. Im sure if none of these stock anything for the 440, you could always ask if they know somewhere. Also, try www.needforspeed.co.uk - based in Scotland-they have a car specific section and it will list everything they do for your particular model.

I think they did do a multipoint injection 1.8 but i think these were rare!! Maybe i should give it a full set of throttle bodies lol but i think that is a bit out of my league.

Just out of interest - what is the spec of you 'loud stereo'

Erm, right. I have a Kenwood CD headunit, Pioneer 150 watt 13 cm components front and rear (with integrated tweeters), 2xJBL GTO 6000 400watt 4 channel amps (clear top panels), and 2x12 Rockford Fosgate Punch 400 watt Subs. Not a massive spec, but very loud! All Autoleads wiring too, and the mandatory boy racer blue neons...

Hi.

There are no multi point 1.8i 400s.

Engines used:
1.7 8v carb
1.7 8v MPEFi
1.7 8v MPEFi Turbo
1.6 8v MPEFi
1.8 8v SPEFi
2.0 8v MPEFi
1.9 8v TDi

All engines are Renault derived, and use some renault parts, but the heads were reworked by Porsche for Volvo I believe.

At the moment i am running a sony MP3 head unit, 2 sets of infinity components (13cm and 17cm), Phoenix Gold QX300.4 amp, kenwood 10" sub, Phoenix Gold QX180.2 amp. Autoleads wiring but no neons yet lol. I have another 2 sets of infinity speakers waiting to go in a the boot - the same as the others but two-ways instead of components.
