How to check an alarm

Hi I've just found that my Volvo 760 Estate has a Cobra Alarm with a key, found where the key goes, lock clicks then nothing !!! Anyone got an idea how I can check to see if this alarm is in operation or dead ?

I'm wondering if it's an imobiliser although it has a siren.

I think the key is to just turn the alarm off if the battery is flat in the key fob, on alarms i have played with in the past that is what it did. If you have the key fob the alarm will either work or not depending on the key.
