Hi,

I have recently purchased a C70 with the optional bi-xenons and I am wanting to have the DRL function switched off as I have already had to replace one xenon bulb plus I think they are just too bright in the daytime.

I have done some research and read that I will need to get a dealer software update for this but the dealer seemed clueless on the phone and insisted it could be done through Vida without software. I insisted in needed the software and the lady I was dealing with then quoted me £118, which I am sure can't be correct? I was so shocked I forgot to ask for a breakdown as I'm sure she just made up a figure.

I also asked about getting the cars software checked and updated whilst it was there but she struggled with that and suggested I bring the car in for a health check, which I now realise would simply check for updates but not provide them if they were available.

The car is due a service, which I was going to have my mechanic do but I am wondering if it's worth biting the bullet and having a dealer do the service, which will include free software updates.

Btw, I have been quoted £240 for the service (car has done 54k), which is basically an oil and filter change and that is about £60 more than a similar service I had on my XF (same mileage) just a few months ago at the Jag dealer across the road from Volvo.

Who knew Volvo's were so expensive to maintain!

Had a pair of OEM Philips Bi Xenons for about £56 and you can get much cheaper again if you go on ebay. My C70 has the bi xenons and what I thought was a bulb was the ballast.

Welcome to Volvo motoring.......great design.........ridiculous dealer prices.........and certainly not problem free cars.

Where did you get the Philips bulbs from for £56 and how much was a ballast (not sure I want to know) as knowing my luck it will be the expensive option?

Btw, I have seen supposedly genuine xenon bulbs on Ebay but I believe some of these can be counterfeit parts, hence my earlier question about the source for the bulbs you purchased.

On a 06 c70 I would guess its a software package specifically for turning the drls off. £118 seems steep in my opinion, it's simply a £12 software update (roughly) but the time for plugging the car in aswell. If you have it serviced then technically you will have the car plugged in for the updates to its firmware so will only pay for the software package. The labour that goes with plugging the car in and scanning will be in the service costs.

I was told by the guy who did my drl update to turn them off, that some volvos don't need the update as its available in vida as a tick box, but I highly doubt this knowing what volvo are like!

Very good point and one that makes this particular service at Volvo a no brainer. Will call around a few dealers in the morning and see if I can get a better price.

Please do post up the outcome.

I too have the bi-Xenons and have been wondering about turning the DRL's off. I don't know whether it's actually possible or not: as you may know, the headlight wash software treats Xenons differently from the halogen lights, and still functions even when the lights are 'off' i.e. DRL-only mode.

Phone Corner Garage at Warton and ask them if they can do it, otherwise if a standard connect up to the car with Vida/ Dice is all that is required there are some forum members in your home town with this capability - What is the software needed for when you are simply disabling DRL.

If you do need to use a main dealer look a little further than the one across the road from the Jaguar garage ;) - Mike

I had my Drl's turned off on my V50 and It was a main dealer job that required a software change,we tried using vida/dice and it couldn't be done it would let you tick the box to turn them off but when you clicked ok it said needs software download.

If that's all the service entails, why not do it yourself?
When it comes to routine maintenance, Volvos are dirt cheap to maintain.
If you insist on taking it into an expensive to run building, to do jobs that can be done on the drive, it's gonna cost you.
Just like any manufacturer.

I only enquired about the cost of a service as I knew it would include a free check of the software and any updates required, rather than potentially pay around £100 in labour to have the software checked without a service and then also be charged for whatever they download, which can be up to £30 per piece of software.

DRL's switched off today by the same dealer for £50, after I was quoted the same by another dealer and called back to cancel my appointment, at which point I explained why I was cancelling. Different person this time and they explained that I had been misquoted and would match the price plus update any other software if it was required.

I believe a service also includes 1 years Volvo Assistance, so in that case, £240 sounds pretty good value to me.

Yes it is if you don't already have it.

Rang my local Volvo dealer in Belfast and asked if they could turn off the dipped daytime running headlights, only if I produced a letter from my insurance provider..........

I guess it would depend on the year of the car aswell as it was a legal requirement after 2011 ish wasn't it?

My local Volvo specialist has quoted me 35 quid for the DRL delete setting (I only want the option to turn them off when working on the car, I always drive with dipped headlights, regardless of what I am driving).
