Geartronic / powershift

Hi guys.


Will be looking at getting a D3 or D5 V50 r-design auto on the very near future.
So... What is the difference between a Geartronic auto box and a powershift auto box.
Is there any real difference between the two different boxes. ?

Geartronic is a real auto box that works in the traditional auto box way, getting on a bit now and newer cars have much better boxes.

PowerShift is basically a manual box with a double clutch with an in built automatic shifter. You really need to ensure this box is serviced 100% at the correct intervals too

Bot are expensive if they go wrong and it is hard to say which is the most reliable. Personally I would have the geartronic over the Ford powershift myself.

Another simple answer:

the Geartronic (torque converter) uses more fuel than the Powershift (automated, dual clutch manual).

The Powershift is the more "modern" transmission in terms of efficiency. The Geartronic is the more "comfortable" transmission. Though the 6 speed autobox on the D3 (not 2.0D!!!) and D4 is a great tranny. The 5 speed D5 auto is an outdated overloaded box from the late 90ies.
