Hi Everyone

My brother-in-law has a 06 c70 which he was driving home last night when it suddenly decided to display the Roof Failure message and start bleeping loudly at him? He pulled over and decided to open and close the roof to see if that sorted/re set it. The roof closed but the boot lid didnt close fully and was open about an inch or two and of course the message and bleeping were still present.

I went over to see if I could help and expected to find some allen keys to manually close it. Couldn't find them in the car and couldn't open the boot to look in there! http://www.therevcounter.co.uk/images/smilies/doh.gif

At this point in rained heavily. Sigh. So we conceded defeat and put a cover over the car and left it. This morning he got in it to take it down to Volvos and tried the roof and it closed! :)

So I've recommended he gets a diagnostic scan to see if anything is actually faulty. But in the mean time I thought i'd hunt through the archives on here to see if its a common fault and what the fix is ands also to find out if there is a way to open the boot and of course manually close the roof should it happen again? The owners handbook was pretty useless and just tells you to consult a dealer.

So has anyone else had the same fault? If so what was the cause and fix?

Can the roof be closed manually?

Is there a way to open the boot when the remote release wont open it?

Any idea on what Volvo will charge him for a diagnostic scan? I think there's an independent Volvo specialist near us in Wickford (Essex), is he likely to have the necessary diagnostic software or is it main dealer only?

Many thanks

AFAIK, there isn't one ... the thing under the flap of carpet in the rear passenger footwell is a pressure release for the roof system hydraulics only, it doesn't open the boot.

At a guess there's a broken wire in a loom somewhere in the mechanism, sometimes making contact, other times not. Possibly on a connection to a sensor, hence the error suddenly coming up when the roof was already closed.

The manual does have it correct ... there's nothing you can do except put the cover on and take it to Volvo.

UPDATE: Doh! Just realised about the open-boot button on the key fob ... which never seems to do anything on mine because of the keyless entry system, hence why I forgot it.

I would imagine the boot handle electrics either aren't powered or are programmed not to respond when the roof isn't fully open or fully closed. Only the top half of the boot actually raises to let the roof in/out, the bit between the rear lights (which contains the lock and the handle) stays in place.

Thanks for teh reply. I've been trawling through archives and googling and its certainly not uncommon and often seems to right itself. Once I can get in the boot I'll check and clean up and obvious sensors for him but I think he may as well stick with it for now and see if it was a one off...
