How many litres in a gallon??

Hello

What ratio of litres per gallon do you use? It makes an interesting conversion to you fuel economy figures.

I googled it today and got 4.55 litres per gallon. I thought the UK was 4.25, but I guess I am wrong.

The US use (I think) 3.85 litres per gallon.

According to the site I usually use - www.onlineconversion.com:

1 gallon [UK] = 4.546 09 liter
1 gallon [US, dry] = 4.404 883 8 liter
1 gallon [US, liquid] = 3.785 411 8 liter

and in case you're Abe Simpson:

1 gallon [UK] = 0.015 873 016 hogshead [UK]

Ahhh, google can't do everything though. I asked it to 'make my evening meal' the other day and it just wouldn't oblige, just throwing up random links to making meals with fruit (?!) and other stuff. Pfff! ;)

Why is fuel consumption still expressed in mpg when we've bought the stuff in litres for years?

Look out for it being expressed as Liters/100km.

Eg. 20mpg = 32kmpg (approx), 100km = 3.125gallons. 3.125gallons x 4.546 (litres per gallon) =

14.2liters/100km.
