View Full Version : Wondering about buying a V50

Hi Everyone.
Just joined the forum so this is my first post and I'm hoping someone can give me a little advice please.

I currently have a Peugeot 307 SW which works fine for me however I've recently developed a problem with my clutch pumping knee. I'm therefore on the lookout for an automatic estate car and the V50 is a car I've always liked the look of.

My annual mileage is about 7000 with mostly short journeys.

My only options for an auto V50 are either the 2.4 petrol or diesel. The petrol seems rather thirsty however the diesel could well have higher maintenance costs due to injectors and DPF.

I would appreciate some advice on my dillemma and it may even be the case that some V50 D5's don't even have a DPF?

I think with that mileage and short journeys a petrol would be a better option. I'm pretty sure all S40/V50 D5's have a dpf. I used to have an S40 2.4i and it is a very nice engine, mine was a manual and averaged around 33 mpg so an auto may be a bit less. There is also the 2.5 T5 petrol auto which will have similar sort of mpg to the 2.4i but more performance.

Are there any reliability issues with the auto gearboxes? My budget for a car is up to £7k so that seems to suggest I'll be looking at cars with 50k plus miles with a decent spec.

I believe it's pretty hard to say as every specimen has it's own history. If I would buy the car again, I would definitely ask someone with Vida/Dice to check the car before buying. The system would definitely show if there are any errors in the car, which can not be noticed visually.

So:
1. Check it visually
2. Check it internally using Vida/Dice
3. Be ready to spend 10-50% of your buying budget to fix the things after you bought a used car, no matter how good the specimen is

..and you'll be safe and happy.. Imho.

P.S. And yes, if you plan to drive small distances - forget about Diesels. From what I understand - DPF can make your life not fun at all. D5 is cool for highways..
