New battery ( 3 weeks old) went flat yesterday, charged it up, reinstalled then ran dice/vida Power output is 12v and dropping, checked with multimeter and readings are same.
Absoluetly no error messages on dash or in vadis, surely this would show up as not charging?

Could it be a electrical drainage due to some faulty wiring or fuse? You might need a specialist to sort it out, but if you have an ammeter - there are steps for you to actually rectify which component by contacting all of those fuses with the ammeter plugged into the negative battery port. From there, you could find which is the source that drains all of the power out.

I would guess the alternator is discharging the battery by an internal short circuit , is the alternator getting too hot to touch ?

Yes it's getting hot after just a short while running.
Had a problem with old battery discharging in the cold weather, checked alternator output before buying battery and it was kicking out 14.4v, this was 3 weeks ago.

New alternator on, 14.75 volts when running.... oh joy!

Having fat hands meant I had to drop the under tray, right hand engine mount and coolant bottle. Meant I could jack engine up and down as needed for tensioner access though. £140 and 3 hours work.

Next job the glow plug relay that's being flagged by vida.....gah

I would be letting the alternator settle in for a couple of days first because a low power state can trigger all manner of "faults" which then rectify themselves.
Have you tested to confirm your glow plugs aren't receiving power?

Not tested yet, was clearing the old fault codes from dodgy alt and flat battery and it threw the glow plug relay up twice (procedure to clear followed). Will check again Wednesday after a good run tomorrow and check plugs while at it.
