Hi all. My car is nearing 70k miles and I think it's time to de-coke EGR and intake manifold as last summer I got a brief 'engine system service required' message which turned out to be EGR related error. Could anyone with experience tell me how much of PITA job is it likely to be?

Inlet manifold is easy enough (I did mine a while ago) and new gaskets can be had for less than £30 on eBay and apart from that it's just a question of cleaning it all out once it's off. Quite surprised by how much material I got out of there!! I've not done the EGR because I had to have a new one a year or so ago, but there are guides online that suggest it's ok, but does have one bolt that is hard to get at...

The guide on unmounting the EGR is in Czech but the pics speak for themselves, or just shout If you need translation.

Is this worth doing? I am at similar mileage, when I took my throttle body off a while back it was filthy!!

Do you just blast it with carb cleaner?

Because EGR recirculates exhaust gases whole intake past the EGR duct junction gets covered in greasy soot. That's why EGR failure occurs, it seizes or the passages get to restricted. Additionally intake manifold gets restricted decreasing engines efficiency.

Sorry to ressurect this thread but I tried removing the EGR at the weekend, however the 5mm allen bolt underneath beat me.

Any tips for this bolt?

Thanks

Thanks. I used that video but didn't read the comments as I was viewing it on my phone when doing the work.

I've ordered one of these to get to the bolt:

Didn't see the universal knuckle adapter (cardan joint) you'll need for that bolt

I couldn't get to the bolt underneath..
I ripped the egr out with a crowbar and some pry bars...

No damage, just bend it and it will snap off. I hate awkward pointless bolts.
