Got my hands on the new 2018 nav discs.
Analysing the content now to see what has changed.
Updates will follow as I see something interesting.

Interesting to see that the Nav OS is running on Windows CE, actually on WinCE v4.2 !

Not Changed:
Nav OS version. The nav core stays unchanged at v2.53

Updated Map Data
The 2018 disc contains map data as of 16.05.2017
The previous 2016 disc contained map data as of 04.12.2014, so the 2018 disc is 2.5 years newer

I did not realise that there was a new update; I’m sure I read on this forum that 2016 was going to be the last.
Did you source yours from Volvo, or direct from Navtech?

I have decided not to load the data tonight, as I am on a 3-day trip into the mountains with the car tomorrow.
And if I start loading the map data tonight, Murphy will kick in and something will go wrong at the last minute, causing great stress just before departure...

They are genuine Volvo maps. With Volvo part numbers and everything.

Volvo state the release on their website, stating the latest map for Europe is Autumn 2017:
https://support.volvocars.com/uk/Pages/article.aspx?article=b82c716d0f6ac89ec0a801517c751 ed7

Autumn 2017 coincides with the map data date of June 2017: they would have probably anticipated release in the quarter following the map date.

Here' are the details of the previous 2016 nav map release, and the current 2018 map release.

My previously loaded 2016 map was
Map P/N 31427790 AA (shown on DVD as "Includes map 31427790")
Map version AEU_06_201501A, which is a 2015 map DVD, released early 2016
SW version 00002308/02400 (02400 is the MMM system, type 2400, 2308 is the OS version, probably v23.08)
DVD Name EU-3050-00_1 (and EU-3050-00_2 for DVD2)
VCC part no 31456966 1520

The new 2018 map disc (2 DVDs) is sold as a 2018 update:
Map P/N 32214049 AA (shown on DVD as "Includes map 32214049")
Map version AEU_06_201701A, which is a 2017 map DVD, released early 2018
SW version 00002308/02400 (unchanged)

Here are some details about the files on the discs

DVD1 - EU-3350-00_1
DVD1 contains the following folders and files:
\MAP\
ALLDATA.KWI
DKLABEL.DAT
LOADING.KWI
MMM02400.SUB
P2006.SCE
SUBCPU.ME

DVD2 - EU-3350-00_2
DVD2 contains the following folders and files:
\MAP\

SwissXC90
Apr 6th, 2018, 11:56
Looking at the files on DVD1:
Folder MAP was created on 20.06.2017
Folder MAP in DVD1 contains 1428 files totalling 4.88 GB with names like 1.000 to 2.272, some are named PARCEL.nnn, some AREASRC, etc. All files were created 19.06.2017 - so the 2018 map disc contains map data from before 19.06.2017

Folder MAP in DVD2 contains 1359 files totalling 3.97 GB with names like PO+SR045, RDICAREA, REGION, SADSR042, TMCINFO, VOICE001, VOICE002 (interesting), XSTINFO, ZIPSR001, etc. These are the map and TMC and voice files

ALLDATA.KWI
File ALLDATA.KWI (4 KB, created 22.05.2017, changed since last map in 2016) contains map version data, indeed here we see:
AEU_06_201701A which is the map name: labeled as 2017 map
DATA VERSION 17/05/16/01 which tells me the map data came from 16.05.2017, makes sense
32214049 AA which is the Volvo map number, it corresponds to the DVD box label 'includes map 32214049'
0020HEV300A__00 000115740+574221 not sure what this refers to, unchanged since last map
FORMAT VERSION KIWI01-22-00, looks like the map data format, unchanged since last map.

DKLABEL.DAT
File DKLABEL.DAT (1 KB, created 19.06.2017, changed since last map in 2016) contains disc label data, the file contains
Version,CUP2006_1 (this is the disc version)
CurrentDisk,1 (the current disc number)
AllDisk,2 (the total number of disks in the set, in this case 2)
TGTCntstart,0 (some TGT counter start; TGT could be Target)
CPYCntstart,0 (some CPY counter start; CPY could be Copy)
TGTCntend,36 (the TGT counter end)
CPYCntend,8 (the CPY counter end)

And on DVD2 the DKLABEL.DAT contains
DKLABEL.DAT
Version,CUP2006_1 (this is the disc version)
CurrentDisk,2 (the current disc number)
AllDisk,2 (the total number of disks in the set, in this case 2)
TGTCntstart,36 (some TGT counter start; TGT could be Target)
CPYCntstart,9 (some CPY counter start; CPY could be Copy)
TGTCntend,174 (the TGT counter end)
CPYCntend,0 (the CPY counter end)

MMM02400.SUB
File MMM02400.SUB (80 KB, created 25.12.2008, unchanged from last map in 2016) contains this header:
CU-P2006 NaviSub CPU F/W 00.00.00;504080 Copyright(C) 2004 MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC CORPORATION All Rights Reserved.
So we know who the manufacturer is
It also contains this content:
Most Reset SyncInConnect: Go_Start OS8104ResetIN bMostLongReset
so we see the file is some sub program dealing with MOST communications
Must be very reliable, hasn't been updated since 2008.
Unchanged since the previous 2015 map released in 2016.

P2006.CPE
File P2006.CPE (122 KB, created 19.06.2017, of course has changed since last map in 2016) contains a table of references and offsets to data blocks in the MAP folder, here's a sample of the content:
LBL alldata.kwi alldata.kwi
CHG 1

TGT 0.1 0.1 3993921376 2
CPY 1.000 N 8388608 8388608 1418344879
CPY 1.001 N 8388608 8388608 2626796704
CPY 1.002 N 8388608 8388608 2133531149
CPY 1.003 N 8388608 8388608 4147856977
CPY 1.004 N 8388608 8388608 1059360445

SUBCPU.ME
File SUBCPU.ME (1 KB, created 27.12.2008, unchanged from last map in 2016) contains the following information:
COMMENT:MMM+
DESTINATION:VOLVO
MODEL_CODE:CU-P2006
CPU_IDENTIFY:SUBCPU
PROGRAM_FILES:MMM02400.SUB:
...showing that the system is a CU-P2006 system, otherwise known as the MMM+
This data stays constant, hasn't changed since 2008. This shows that 2400 is not a version number, but a system number.
Indeed MMM02400 means MMM system, type 2400.
Unchanged since the previous 2015 map released in 2016.

LOADING.KWI
File LOADING.KWI (14.7 MB, created 30.03.2015, unchanged from last map in 2016) is the nav OS software (unchanged so unlikely to be new version)

It contains headers with the followig identifiers:
CUP2006.MLD.ORG (the system type, P2006)
00000253 (the navigation core version number, v2.53)
00002308 (another version number, 23.08)

B L D - C U - P 2 0 0 6 2 . 5 3 N A V I C O R E ( S H 7 7 7 0 / S H 4 A ) 3 r d C u t (looks like an identifier for the navigation core)

The 2.53 matches the 00000253 number in the file header, so this is the navicore version number

T h i s K e r n e l w a s b u i l d f o r S H - 4 C a r N a v i g a t i o n S y s t e m .

W i n d o w s C E F i r m w a r e I n i t

Ahhh... Windows CE!!
I wonder what version?

C:\WINCE420\PUBLIC\CUP200~2\WINCE420\CUP2006\cesys gen\oak\target\SH4\retail\secur32.pdb

I guess WinCE v4.20

So who wrote the software? Let's look further....

C:\P2006\03_RUBY\RubyProjectv2302\RubyProject\Navi \src\RubyUI\UI_MenuControl\main\UI_MenuControlP200 6.cpp

Now thats interesting, that's the path to the cpp source files

Update all installed successfully in 210 minutes (3.5 hours) with a battery charger connected all the time.

Off for a 2 hour drive this afternoon, I will watch the nav to see how it goes.

No idea what has changed.
You never really know.

SwissXC90

So loaded the new map on Friday and then drove to the mountains that afternoon.

On the way back I observed the nav system critically.
At the start of the 2 hour drive it said we would be home at 20:34
It varied from 20:34 to 20:37 during the drive, and was back at 20:34 as we hit our home town.
Only at red traffic lights at the last 23km, did it then creep up and eventually we arrived at 20:37

I was impressed!
I wonder if they have tweaked the average road speeds to improved estimated arrival times?

To add to the disappointment for those of us who updated recently, the Volvo website implies that updates within two years are available free for non-Sensus equipped cars and then says that its only available for non-Sensus equipped cars:

https://support.volvocars.com/uk/pages/article.aspx?article=b82c716d0f6ac89ec0a801517c751 ed7

"If your car is equipped with a system that is not Sensus Navigation the map update option is still available, see the information for each system below."

Click on the "i" between Europe and Autumn 2017 for XC90 MY07-14 and get the message:

"For Europe, MapCareTM is included for two years. For more information, see MapCareTM."

Click on the link and find out that MapCareTM is available for cars equipped with Sensus Navigation.....

**sigh**

But given that the car you drive is now 4 years old, you are outside the "two years free maps" so why are you disappointed?

That's the way of the world: new is often better, those with the new enjoy the better options and features, while those with the old have other real benefits.

What real benefits did I have by buying an older 2009 XC90 over the newer 2016 XC90 (when I bought my car 2 years ago)?
A really BIG benefit: The purchase price was only 20% of the new XC90.

So I saved around 60,000 GBP, and that means I can afford to spend a little money on maps every now and then.

That's how I see the world...

I agree fully with you on the concept of buying a used instead of new Volvo - like you, I saved a fortune off the price of a new car and am very happy with the well maintained example that I got.

In terms of the maps, it looks likem I misinterpreted the wording of their offer. I understood it as saying that if you purchased maps from Volvo and a newer version was released within two years that the update to the newer version would be free. I bought a maps update from a Volvo dealer last August and to keep up to date I would now have to buy another one with no price concession. That's fine I suppose but for a while I thought that there was an offer for more recent purchasers.

In the section that says:

Map updates for older navigation systems

"If your car is equipped with a system that is not Sensus Navigation the map update option is still available, see the information for each system below."

The XC90 MY07-14 is included on the list of cars to which this applies.

When you click on the "i" beside Europe in that same section, you see a message saying:

"For Europe, MapCareTM is included for two years. For more information, see MapCareTM."

So I misunderstood as elsewhere on the site it says that MapCare only applies to Sensus equipped cars.

Its a little amusing that the navigation on their website is not accurate, given the subject that its dealing with.

I totally agree, and it shows that all navigation systems contain navigation errors :D

Here's what I have seen in my life:

A DVD or a CD can be copied verbatim by various copy programs.

But a copied DVD is not identical to a pressed DVD.
It can suffer 2 primary issues:

1. Errors through the copy process. Depending on the quality of the blank, and the quality of the drive used to make a copy disc, and the speed in which it was created, the copied DVD will have errors on it.
I once researched copy errors of a CD at various burn rates and was surprised at how many errors resulted.
Most all DVDs and CDs have error correction algorithms built into the data and thus will correct the errors to a certain extent - but sometimes the errors are significant, and can cause havoc in the reader.

2. Due to the physical design, a copied DVD or CD does not reflect as much light as a pressed DVD or CD. It is simply less reflective.
This means the laser works a bit harder.
If the laser is old and getting weak, it may struggle.
In my life I have seen nav units read pressed DVDs perfectly, but struggle to read copied DVDs. Simply due to the age of the laser. Only solution here was to use an original pressed disc, or change the laser (or drive)

So how many operational hours has your laser had?
Look it up in the nav.
Then research the design lifetime of automotive lasers and make a guess as to where it is in it's lifetime curve.

So there you go.

I have concentrated on the physics only.
I won't make any comments here on the legal or moral aspects of copying a disc.

What about setting up a group buy on the forum in the same way as the Volvotech CFE? is it the forum co-ordinator who would do this?

What about setting up a group buy on the forum in the same way as the Volvotech CFE? is it the forum co-ordinator who would do this?

That would be software piracy:
a deliberate attempt to defraud the seller by knowingly buying a copyrighted item for generation of copies intended to be sold

Sorry - this is not what I meant; I am wondering if we can get enough people together to arrange a bulk discount from a Volvo dealer if they will accommodate this.

At £22, no - he didn't.

Like many of us on here, I guess Johnny250 (who hasn't been back online since last Christmas), bought from one of the "replica disc" sellers.

These sellers will include instructions, but basically you need to let the system update itself by reading from the new discs.

This can take more than 3 hours - with the ignition on.

If you are making a lengthy trip, you can do it then, otherwise you will need a beefy (5+ Amp) charger on the battery while you do it (or leave the engine running of course...)

I believe you can pause the update and then continue later, but I can't remember exactly how that goes.

Cheers

No you don’t need to do it me go. I did ours over about a week. It pause each time you turn it off. You can even pause it to use the Sat Nav it’s self but only up to a certain point. From memory that’s when you insert the second disc. The instructions when you install it tell you that you can pause it at first.
