I have been cleaning up a B18 block and once the old traces of the head gasket were removed I see several letter E s on the face and a C ..Anyone shed any light on what these refer to please ?

Since no one has jumped in to respond, I'll offer my two (American) cents.

But please keep in mind that I have no actual knowledge. Just a guess - but this is the Internet where a wild guess is as just good as an actual fact.

It means you have an uncut block.

The letters probably signify the specific piston parts bin from which the engine assembly worker was supposed to pull the pistons.

Assuming slight variations in the bore during the manufacturing process, he would pull pistons to match and thereby keep the assembly process up to speed.

This is MG and a bit off topic, but see post #13.
