Coolant loss

Hi,

I've noticed I am loosing coolant on my volvo V50 2.0d 2006. There seems to be water all over and around the expansion tank but no obvious leaks. It does not over heat, the gauge stays halfway when reaches temperature. No smoke etc. Any ideas? Thanks

Maybe a slightly blocked return causing it to overflow? Sometimes pump impellers on some cars can break up over time... Had it on a vr6 golf years back. Just a thought.
