My 2006 v50 is showing an engine management and the oil warning light, but only when the ignition is switch to at position two - just before starting. I also get "Engine System Service Required" when I take the car up to 3,000rpm in third and get more black/blue smoke from exhaust. the car has done 180,000.
What I'v done to try and fix it: Had the fault codes checked. One was an 019 and it showed that I needed new glow plugs. Got those put in last week. So far it has cost me £180 (£50 for diagnostics, £50 for glow plugs and £80 to get them put in.)
Anything anyone else can suggest to solve the problem, or should I just accept the car is getting old and just drive it until something else knackers. I don't really want to keep throwing money at it. Thanks.

That's the norm.
You need the codes read using Volvo software to determine the reason for the service required message, a generic reader probably wont pick it up.
I would guess your last garage did not have this equipment.

I thought I might need to go down that route. I had the codes read but an independent Volvo garage in Clydebank, and they said I'd need to take it to the Volvo main dealer in Glasgow for them to put the VIDA DiCE equipment on it. This will cost me £140 just to get the codes read. Any Volvo people out there in The West of Scotland who could do this for more me if payment, or should I just buy one of those CheshireD5 clone ones for £100 that are advertised on this forum?

Ask on the Volvo Owners Scotland FB page you might find someone close by willing to put it on Vida/Dice for free or for fuel money.

Also there is Voltech near Glasgow that are a Volvo specialist garage that a lot of members recommend, that are think are cheaper than the main dealer.

Thanks for that info OlsBean. I'll look at that link. I went to that Voltech garage you mentioned and yes they are good. The bloke identified a glow plug problem and a number of other code faults. He took out and cleaned the CEM unit, and when I got the plugs off the internet, he fitted them in for me. Apparently the plugs where not easy to get out, and two of them were faulty. The guy at the garage said if my car was still throwing up fault codes, I'd need to take it to the main Glasgow dealer who have more specialist software, but that is expensive just to tell me what is wrong, let alone fixing it.

Sorry to highjack the thread but where did you get the CEM plugs from? I’m not having much luck with google/eBay
