I have a 2000 V70 II TDI 2.5 audi engine. The car stalled yesterday, and when I restarted it it made a noise like a tractor and started smoking. Under the bonnet the smoke was coming from the aux belt, and the tensioner was bouncing on the belt. I stripped the belt off and found the bearing on the roller had gone, so bought a new one.
While fitting this i noticed that the belt seemed out of line. On closer inspection the crank wheel at the bottom has separated from the aux belt thingy.
I removed the timing belt cover to find lots of sticky black goo on the belt itself.
What is going on?
