I have a 2000 V70 II TDI 2.5 audi engine. The car stalled yesterday, and when I restarted it it made a noise like a tractor and started smoking. Under the bonnet the smoke was coming from the aux belt, and the tensioner was bouncing on the belt. I stripped the belt off and found the bearing on the roller had gone, so bought a new one.
While fitting this i noticed that the belt seemed out of line. On closer inspection the crank wheel at the bottom has separated from the aux belt thingy.
I removed the timing belt cover to find lots of sticky black goo on the belt itself.
What is going on?

The crank pulley has split, the black deposit on the timing belt is the rubber from inside the pulley. I am having a nightmare getting the thing off....
The car has only done 200 000 kilometers (120 000 miles), and up to 180 000 had a full service history.
This could easily have lead to a timing belt faluire so watch out.
The part here in France is only about 125 euros
