440 Cam/Timing Belt Snapped

The cambelt has just snapped on my 1996 Volvo 440, which has the 1.8L B18U engine. I was moving very slowly when it went. Does anyone know if this is an interference engine, and if there is likely to be any damage to the valves? The car now has 133K on the clock and I am trying to decide if it is worth putting a new belt on to see if it runs again. Any advice would be really appreciated.

I bought a 440 with a snapped belt, 1.8 single point, broke one morning after he started, they are an interference engine, but mine was ok, put a belt on it, it started on 3 cyl's and came on to 4 after a couple of minutes.

Slow speed, you might be lucky!

Happened to me years ago with a Montego 1.6 (I'm blushing embarrasingly now) at around 35-40mph (defo an interferance job). Got a tow home, new belt fitted & away it went again no snags.

Thanks for the advice. I have some help to fit a new belt tonight so for £13.50 its worth giving it a go. Will let you know the result.

Once you've got the new belt on, remember to turn the engine by hand (easier if the plugs are removed). You should be able to notice if anything 'hits'. If it turns okay, fire it up then. Good Luck:thumbs_up:

Got new belt fitted in a couple of hours, started it up and now its running better than ever. Guess I was lucky. Thanks for the advice.
