Cutting out when hot

I wonder if anyone can help with the problem with my 1995 Volvo 440i . It starts perfectly from cold however after a few miles the tickover becomes erratic, increasing to as much as 3000 rpm and then it stops. It will not restart until it has cooled down and then it is perfect.
The little diagnostic box in the engine compartment shows no fault codes.
Any suggestions ?

Most likely engine temp sensor, on the B20F its located below no 4 cyl, most likey same on the other 400 series engines
