In the P1800E both the M410 gearbox in the first year(s) and M41 (last years) were applied. Can anybody confirm to me whether the needle-bearings in the J-type OD-unit are different in these 2 types of gearboxes? If so or not does anybody have SKF or other make ref.nrs. to source these locally from the SKF/FAG/INA supplier!?

I have been warned by a fellow volvo friend that the Needle-bearings for the M410 gearbox are not easy obtainable whereas in my opinion for both gearboxes the same must be used (knowing the traditional way of developping parts by our swedish friends in our volvo's)

hope to hear soon (on joseph.diks@umt-group.com)

Joe,
I think the overdrives are the same although the trannies
are different. The M410 is more rugged but has lube issues
that make the tranny bearings become noisy at ~100k miles.
I've got one in my 164 that makes a lot of noise, for example
but the tranny works OK. Since the diff is 3.31 it doesn't
bother me much that the OD doesn't engage.

Given the choice I would much prefer the M41, although as nearly
as I can tell there is no simple way to put one into a 164.
The one in my Amazon Estate has been trouble-free since I put
it in about 16 years ago in Panama. (Had to ship it down from
Vermont in pieces because it was too heavy to mail in one piece.)

The best advice I know of on ODs comes from Duane Hoberg.
If you post an OD question on the Brickboard
(www.brickboard.com/RWD/)
Duane will probably answer it.
