View Full Version : PV: - Intermittent clicking from gearbox
I have a 1953 PV444E with a 3 speed box (H series box). Recently a clicking noise started when in 1st and 2nd, but not 3rd. It does not always happen. The sound seems to come from the gearbox/bell housing area. The speed of the clicking is linked to rpm.
Before removing the box and clutch, does anyone have any ideas?

does it sound like a chiped tooth or a bearing
The fact it is intermittent and only 1st and/or 2nd gear suggests it is neither. A damaged tooth or bearing would result in it being there all the time.

First, I'd assure it has oil to the correct level...and I'd also try removing speedo cable to see if noise still occurs...

Is the clicking related to engine/gearbox/prop shaft revs? Does it do it in 2 or 3 with the car stationary, clutch in?
Sods law, it drove perfectly going home from work yesterday. I checked the gearbox oil and it was OK, but decided to change it as I had already got it up on the stands and the filler plug out (pig of a job).
