View Full Version : How much when new?

Does anyone have any idea how much my car, a 1969 2 door Amazon, would have cost when it was new?
I've tried Google without any luck, and all the usual car price sites don't go any further back than the 90s. I've got an old 'Motor' road test of a 4 door saloon from 1966 which gives the price of that car at just over £1,100. Would it have gone up much in the intervening 3 years?
Does anyone have any old invoices, adverts, magazines etc, that could give me a definitive answer?

Someone should have an original bill of sale somewhere. I think inflation was about 5-6% in the late 60s so I should think the price of an Amazon may have gone up a couple of hundred quid between 66-69. Anyway, I don't have figures, so this is conjecture.

I have a 'Motor' car-by-car guide from October 1967. It lists these models:-

Volvo 131 £1090, basic £885
Volvo 133 £1145, basic £930
Volvo 123GT £1311, basic £1065

It doesn't say what 'basic' is, probably without mudflaps, carpets, trim options etc

By comparison a Fiat 500 was £417, basic £338 and a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow £6971, basic £5670.

Cheers for the help so far guys, I'd guess 'basic' was the price before car tax and delivery, with optional extras to be added on top.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that a new 131 cost more than a daimler sovereign when new...

The 1800S was in the same price bracket as an E Type, but the Amazon was sensible money - iirc, only a bit more than a Triumph 2000.

I didn't know that. My uncle nearly bought a 122S in 1965 and said it was only a few hundred shy of a fintail Merc.....
